I am not fond of sit-ups either but many a fitness instructor recommends sit-ups to help flatten tummies.

Every other day, I do 10x3 sit-ups of the ADF entrance specified technique and 10x3 leg-ups of the technique that involves bring knees to chest from a completely flat position, and that is more than my fill of sit-ups...‼
