"What price success? How the Australian swim squad at the Rio Olympics is funded by us"
"IT HAS cost the Australian taxpayer $38 million to get our swimmers to Rio. With estimates the team could win eight gold medals, that works out to $4.75 million each.@
Â
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, so no problem, we can blow $38m on mediocre swimming performances.
Â
I guess that puts into perspective the complaints about the cost of other "Government" spending.
Â
Put another way what do you get for $38m? A new hospital wing? :Shame:Â :angry:Â

"Another government super âraidâ provokes union
Â
Queensland Treasurer Curtis Pitt has put the Labor government on collision course with one of the stateâs biggest unions, as he defends accusations of again raiding public servantsâ superannuation.

The public sector union ÂTogether will lobby crossbenchers to defeat Labor legislation to allow Mr Pitt to alter the superannuation payouts to some long-Âserving bureaucrats, under their defined benefit scheme.

State Actuary Wayne Cannon told a parliamentary committee that Laborâs proposed change would fix an âinequityâ that could deny a small number of public servants up to $210,000 extra when they retired.
Â

Together Union secretary Alex Scott opposed the measure: âAs a matter of principle, we never think any treasurer should ever be Âallowed to interfere in the superannuation of defined benefit scheme members."

Well, see this is a bit complex - a public sector union is by definition paid for by the tax payer - including super contributions - so where should the authority to change the scheme, if necessary, lie with?

Speaking of cheap nasty stuff... "Viral subway cricket video was an elaborate prank" was about a woman releasing a swarm of crickets in a crowded train causing a panic and then someone pulled the brake which stranded the train on a bridge for half an hour.

Oldest fossils found in Greenland
The earliest fossil evidence of life on Earth has been found in rocks 3.7 billion years old in Greenland, raising the chances Mars also hosted life aeons ago.
The experts on Wednesday announced they've found tiny humps, between one and 4 cm tall, in rocks at Isua in south-west Greenland that they said were fossilised groups of microbes similar to ones now found in seas from Bermuda to Australia.
If confirmed as fossilised communities of bacteria known as stromatolites - rather than a freak natural formation - the lumps would pre-date fossils found in Australia as the earliest evidence of life on Earth by 220 million years.
"This indicates the Earth was no longer some sort of hell 3.7 billion years ago," lead author Allen Nutman, of the University of Wollongong, told Reuters of the findings that were published in the journal Nature.
"It was a place where life could flourish."
Earth formed about 4.6 billion years ago and the relative sophistication of stromatolites indicated that life had evolved quickly after a bombardment by asteroids ended about four billion years ago.
"Stromatolites contain billions of bacteria ... they're making the equivalent of apartment complexes," said Martin Van Kranendonk, a co-author at the University of New South Wales who identified the previously oldest fossils, dating from 3.48 billion years ago.
At the time stromatolites started growing in gooey masses on a forgotten seabed, the Earth was probably similar to Mars with liquid water at the surface, orbiting a sun that was 30 per cent dimmer than today, the scientists said.
Those parallels could be a new spur to study whether Mars once had life, the authors said.
"Suddenly, Mars may look even more promising than before as a potential abode for past life," Abigail Allwood, of the California Institute of Technology, wrote in a commentary in Nature.
The Greenland find was made after a retreat of snow and ice exposed long-hidden rocks.

Julie Bishop makes a bold fashion statement in a pair of shorts > http://www.news.com.au/national/politics/julie-bishop-makes-a-bold-fashion-statement-in-a-pair-of-shorts/news-story/ec2da693a431f2a95c5fed1928749f3c

Â
Her name is Julie, she was a showgirl
But that was thirty years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Julie
Still in dress she used to wear
Faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her Brendon and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind

LOL I was never all that "serious" in the first place.
Â
The assertion that Abbott supporters were somehow more informed than non Abbott supporters needed a response.
Â
Dunno who PC Left is. Is he a cop or something?
Â
For the record, prior to 2007 most of my votes were Liberal. Never voted for Keating or Latham.
Â
Workchoices changed all that. I can happily rule out voting Liberal again for that reason alone.

Anyway that's for another thread

Baby born with DNA from 3 people > http://www.news.com.au/world/breaking-ne...53511d98d3
Â
Scientists say the first baby has been born from a new technique that combines DNA from three people.
The goal is to prevent the child from inheriting a serous genetic disease from the mother.
The birth of the baby boy is revealed in a research summary published by the journal Fertility & Sterility.
Scientists plan to make a fuller presentation at an October meeting.
The magazine New Scientist said the baby was born five months ago to parents from Jordan.
The technique involved removing some of the mother's DNA from an egg, and leaving the disease-causing DNA behind.
The healthy DNA was slipped into a donor's egg, which was then fertilised.
As a result, the baby inherited DNA from both parents and the egg donor.

Â
Â
Â
Â
Yes
Â
It's almost compulsory I reckon, deeply moving place!!!
Â
Also visited the Intrepid museum - it's an aircraft carrier moored in the Hudson river where that plane came down.
Â
Well worth the look - includes the Space Shuttle Endeavour, a Concorde and international fighter planes.
Â
My mate - an american - once flew F4's (Phantoms) off a carrier during the Vietnam war. They had one on the flight deck that I snapped and sent to him.
Â
But, no matter how much you enjoy another place coming home is definitely the go!!!!! :Hug:Â eace:Â :wacky:Â
