What's the odds that the NBN (National Broadband Network) along with what ever other infrastructure is being funded at the minute gets privatized to help us get out of this extraordinary debt we are accumulating.
* SIGH *

How does Telstra still hold the aces?... I thought the whole point of the NBN was because Telstra wouldn't come to the party... we are going to foot the bill instead, in its entirety.

Either way... we (the tax payer) are going to end up owning a NBN that will likely be privatized in the future (the point of this thread). Peter, are you saying that somehow Telstra is going to stop the NBN or devalue the NBN so much so that privatization will be irrelevant considering the NBN will be somehow made worthless?

Yeah, don't we, the tax payer, own everything that the government owns?
There is bound to be hands held high, if not in Australia then an overseas consort, to run the NBN, and a government initiated board to run the NBN wouldn't surprise me either.
I know, for a fact, of one semi-major ISP that is already prepared to purchase from the new NBN, I'm not sure there will be much choice as the monopoly on speed will side with the NBN.

Yeah I guess the server is not the fastest in the world but seems ok to me. Maybe I am easily pleased! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

The Melbourne Chat server is fine, Glen and I am not bothered to investigate any of the questions you have posed, Peter.

I'm not being defensive... just stating my opinion... the Melbourne Chat website loads very fast for me... I just sound short 'cause of off-line distractions.

I'm really looking forward to a well streamed episode of Mythbusters at an affordable price--1.5Mbps just does not cut the mustard; however, the poor quality streaming could also be a poorly coded web application/implementation on the part of SBS.
...and existing speeds will become cheaper with the introduction of even faster speeds... I hopeâ¼

You Tube videos steam fine; however, the ABC iView and SBS video viewer video tends to stutter not long after playback begins but the audio streams fine.

I saw in yesterday's Aged that the plan is/maybe/was/who knows NBN will be "floated" in about five years.
I guess that means we can buy it all over again!!??
I sighed out loud when first hearing that a few days back.
In today's Sun Terry McCann let slip that Telstra are going to switch on the 100Mbs Foxtel Broadband to it's 1 million Melbourne customers before Christmas!
Then after Christmas to millions in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide!
Don't quote me Peter; however, I am fairly certain that the 100Mbps Foxtel line is not dedicated, its a shared 100Mbps, and the NBN 100Mbps is dedicated.

So if telstra is split in two does that mean we don't need the National Broadband Network anymore?

I thought the whole reason we were building a new network was because telstra would not share! We already have telstra optic fibre through much of melbourne. Why would we put down more fibre in the same street? <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wacky:' /> I appreciate that lots of areas don't have optic fibre and i hope they all get it soon! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

I don't know, Glen, I thought the issue was that Telstra wouldn't develop the infrastructure on their dime.

Hey! What you gotta hope is that Telstra (split or not) does not grab ALL the customers!
If it does the NBN will be worthless!
I'll be happy with any faster network that results in more affordable speeds at the lower spectrum, across the board of ISPs.

I guess it depends upon your definition of affordable?
I'm with TPG on their ADSL2+.
Download limits are presently 15/15 Gigbytes per month at $39.90.
The speeds I get are OK not super cos I live about 1.5Km from the exchange.
I pay the same for 1.5 Mbps and would like to pay the same for faster speeds... and a high speed network would deliver such a desire.
