Penguin Number Plates - FINA World Swimming Championships

Quote:Penguin Number Plates - FINA World Swimming Championships

A number plate featuring the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships mascot, the Little Penguin, can now be ordered to commemorate the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships and to help protect our Little Penguins.

Little Penguins are only found along the southern coast of Australia and New Zealand and are the smallest of any penguin in the world, standing only 33 centimetres tall. Victoria is home to 65 to 70,000 breeding birds spread between 27 breeding colonies.

They breed on islands and at isolated places along the Victorian coast from Gabo Island in the east to near Portland in the west. The largest Victorian colonies are on Gabo Island and Phillip Island.

There are many threats to the Little Penguin such as sharks, seals, Killer Whales, White-bellied Sea-Eagles and large gulls. Unfortunately, the Little Penguin's biggest threat is humans – they are killed by our plastic rubbish, oil spills at sea, loss of habitat and by introduced animals such as foxes, cats and dogs.

Proceeds from the sale of the number plates will go to non-profit organisations involved in protecting the Little Penguin and its natural environment. Organisations such as the Phillip Island Foundation and the St Kilda Penguin Study Group conduct extensive research into the behaviour and habitat of the Little Penguin.

Only 1,000 limited edition number plates are available at a cost of $285 per set.

To order your limited edition number plates, simply call the Department of Sustainability and Environment's Customer Service Centre on 136 186.

Don't miss out, last year's Commonwealth Games 'Karak' number plates sold like hot cakes.
