Snap! Press photos from the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games

The Snap! exhibition marks 50 years since the 1956 Olympic Games were held in Melbourne and runs from 15 November 2006 to 18 January 2007 at the Melbourne Town Hall City Gallery.

Approximately 500 journalists and photographers visited Melbourne during the 1956 Olympics to cover the first Olympics held away from Europe and the USA. Snap! presents a photo gallery of Melbourne's Olympic moments.

The Melbourne Games are often seen as a key event in Australia's history. In the medal stakes, the 1956 Games were Australia's most successful to date. Australia finished third on the medal tally behind the USSR and the USA.

The City Gallery is on the ground level at the Melbourne Town Hall in Swanston Street and is open:

Monday: 10am to 2pm

Tuesday to Thursday: 11am to 6pm

Friday 11am to 6.30pm

Saturday 10am to 2pm
