Last time I was in Melbourne I happened upon a CD/DVD store that had an amazing selection of titles (lots of movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s), many of which I haven't seen in Sydney. It was on our last day in Melbourne and it was also just about 30 minutes before the store closed, so I didn't have much time to look around. I ended up buying about $130 worth of DVDs and would have spent more if I had more money to spend. I think the store was at the western end of Bourke Street, near Parliament house, but we did a lot of walking that day and I'm not sure of exactly where it was.
Anyone know where the shop is and what it's called?

I'm sure that's the shop. I was wanting to see what DVDs they had for sale, as they have some movies in their store that you just can't get in Sydney, but their online catalogue seems to be mostly CDs. When I have a bit of spare time I'll check it out a bit further, but I couldn't find the ones I was looking for on a quick search...

I think the shop you are after is Play (it is opposite Thomas'). I'm pretty sure they don't have a website but you can contact them on (03) 9650 0652.
They do a lot of the rare stuff that you won't find in the regular stores.
I've picked up some great stuff that I had forgotten about.
If they don't have it, they will happily get it for you.

I just checked it out on Google Maps and, yes, it was Play DVD and not Thomas Music that I was thinking of. The interior of Thomas Music looked familiar, but then I remember looking at two stores in that part of Bourke Street, so I must have called in there as well. What I do remember though was that after I left the shop, I walked along a nearby laneway and on to Lonsdale Street without crossing the road, so it must have been Play DVD, as Thomas Music is on the other side of Bourke Street.
It may be just as well that they don't have a website - I'd probably have spent a few hundred dollars by now if they did....
