From California, As The Saying Goes, "never Drink By Yourself" Anyone Game?
#1
Hey all

im 32 yr old guy from California. Ive lived all over the US (LA, NYC, San Diego, Lake Tahoe)

Im a graphic designer working at a clothing company here. I've been here for about 5 months and i have to say out of all the places ive lived this take the cake for being so hard to make new friends.

I have no problems hitting the town by myself, but im realizing that it isnt as common here as it is in San Fran or New York. Bigger places i guess.

Im not a backpacker. Not a wierdo. Just a dude that looking for like minded people to hang on the weekends with and go out on the town.

I feel common interests are always good...so here are mine: Sports, surfing, snowboarding, the arts, design, live music (anything and everything), music festivals, road trips, wine valleys, did i mention snowboarding? i've been at it for 15 years now. If your familiar with laid back Californian attitudes...well thats me.

As far as sports goes im into all American sports, and have just touched the surface of AFL. Looks interesting, but i think going to a game by myself might be a bit odd out here.

Anyone game hit me up!

Hi there!

"I've been here for about 5 months and i have to say out of all the places ive lived this take the cake for being so hard to make new friends." Why doesn't this surprise me <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />... I've grown up in Melbourne and have come to similar conclusions. Melbourne people (although generally friendly) generally have a tendency to keep a distance from "strangers", especially if it involves general socializing (i.e. other than help with directions, etc.).

I'm into a lot of the interests you've mentioned, especially road trips. I follow the NFL occasionally.

I'm new to Melbourne as well, looking for someone to go out with and have a drink with. Don't know too many people yet so would love to get to know more <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Shoot me an email at ashleightj89@hotmail.com if you're interested in a chat <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Heya:

I took a glance at your posting and I'm from California myself too. I just moved into Melbourne for about 2 weeks now. I'm game for hanging out as well. Quite a bit of your interests are same as mine, wine & dine, music festivals, arts, roadtrips etc. I'm 26.

Well, I was just about to write the same as Ben. Except that I am from Portugal instead of California and I arrived 3 weeks ago instead of 2. But "wine & dine, music festivals, arts, roadtrips etc." are also my kind of stuff. In sports I'm more of a soccer fan than actually American footbal, but I like any kind of sports.

I have been hitting the town by myself and I think enough time has passed since I last went for a drink with friends!

If any plans come into mind for a meet up, drop a message! I'll do the same.

EBDual I couldn't agree more with you. I've been living in Melbourne for 4 years now and I still don't have anyone to call friend.

Well, I'd be happy to join you guys (whoever has written here) for something (not snowboarding, I have the cold weather and the show [Image: rolleyes.gif]) but I'm definitely in for live music [Image: wacky.gif]

Does anyone think that it's harder to form friendships in Melbourne compared with most other cities around the world? If so, why do you think this is the case?

Hey Mariana, I've been in Melbourne just over 2 months now and would like to meet up with some new fun people, I'm Irish, 31 going on 21, enjoy going to gigs, few drinks, out-doors activites and generally life! I was here with friends in Australia a number of years back as a backpacker and find it much tougher this time around to meet new people - probably cos it's "real life" this time around. I'm here with my boyfriend but would like to find some girlfriends to hang out with....that said mixed groups all good too!

Let me know if you fancy doing something sometime.

Cheers,

Mari
