Fruit and vegie scare - recall in Melbourne Safeway
An investigation is under way after a potentially fatal food contamination scare at the Safeway supermarket at Bayswater in Melbourne's east.
The Bayswater store reopened this morning after forensic experts and police carried out tests overnight.
Victoria Police have confirmed that the foreign objects were found in the fresh produce section of the Bayswater Safeway store. These foreign objects had the potential to cause severe injury and even death if handled or swallowed.
Other unspecified items inside the store have also been damaged.
Safeway has issued a product recall for all fruit and vegetables bought at Bayswater yesterday. Customers will be fully refunded. They are reminded to be very careful handling the harmful fruit and vegies.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious is urged to contact police.
