World Swimming Championships Melbourne 2007

Melbourne will host some of the finest aquatic athletes in the world when the 12th FINA World Championships begin in Melbourne on March 2007. The World Championships will be held from 17 March - 1 April 2007. There will be no shortage of action for spectators with 87 competition sessions being held over the 15-day event.



There will be five aquatics disciplines will be contested at the World Championships. They include:



- Swimming

- Open Water Swimming

- Diving

- Water Polo

- Synchronised Swimming



The venues for the World Championships include:



- Rod Laver Arena - Swimming, Synchronised Swimming

- Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre - Water Polo, Diving

- St Kilda Beach - Open Water Swimming



An estimated 2000 athletes from as many as 175 countries will compete at the World Championships. The estimated global television audience during the World Championships is expected to be 1 billion viewers. The World Championships are expected to attract 12,000 interstate and international visitors to Melbourne.



EVENT DETAILS



1. Swimming

Heats, Semifinals, and Finals will be held for Swimming events on the Melbourne 2007 program, with a total of 42 gold medals available for competition. The meet itself will take place over eight days during the second week of the Championships.



2. Water Polo

The water polo competition will see the 16 top men's and women's teams battling it out for the title of World Champions. A round robin competition will take place in four divisions, each with four teams, with the two highest placed teams moving through the medal games.



The World Championships Water Polo competition also serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympics.

3. Synchronised Swimming

The Synchronised Swimming program features a solo, a duet, and a team of eight competition. There is also a combination routine, consisting of a mixture of the solo, duet and team routine.



The competition has preliminaries in the technical routine, and a free routine, with the highest scoring athletes progressing to the final. The free routine is one where the athlete has a choice in music and choreography, whilst with the technical routine the athletes/ teams must perform a series of required components.



4. Diving

The Diving competition will see athletes fighting it out for 10 gold medals. Athletes will contest the 1m and 3m Springboard events, as well as the 10m Platform as individuals. The 3m and 10m events will also form part of the synchronised program.



In diving there are 6 types of dives the athletes can perform:

• Forward

• Backward

• Reverse

• Inward

• Twisting

• Arm stand



5. Open Water Swimming

The Open Water Swimming schedule will see Men and Women battling out in open waters over 5km, 10km and 25km distances. The most arduous of aquatic disciplines, open water swimmers not only have the distances to contend with, they also have to deal with a multitude of elements such as the weather and water currents.



The Open Water Swimming Program will be held at St Kilda beach.

Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony will be held on Saturday 17 March 2007 at 8.00pm. Details of the Opening Ceremony are being completed. Tickets will be available for sale at a later date.
