Still a long time until the end of current government.

And the end of all independents for an even longer time!

And goodbye unloved Greens.

I think the greens do quite well in tasmania. They won a lot of votes through their fight to protect the forests etc, stop the pulp mills etc.

Tassie is such a great place I would love to visit again. Clean and green.

You could walk.......if you walked onto the spirit of tasmania! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I have estimated the walking time to Station Pier would be about 3 hours. hehehe <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I dont come here very often these days but yes peter you will soon get everything you want.

I guess its never made sense to me why the Greens are hated so much by some. I cant see anything wrong with people being concerned about fresh air, clean water, the protection of the great barrier reef, saving our oceans from over fishing, the destruction of our wondrous nature, beautiful birds, trees and animals.

People caring about the rights of gay people to marry the people they love, objecting to putting little children behind barbed wire,,..unloved...pity.

Hi greenguy, When you put it that way, you would think that they would have greater community support. I am sure they do OK with the young person vote.

At least you have explained it to me Peter. No attacks on you either.

I am deeply worried about the environment.

I never realsied how much "washing" was involved in politics! Certainly not a field for those who shower once a week! hahaha

Yes Peter I know but they ALL preach. In issues like climate change they may be extremely forceful but trust me mate it gets so irritating. The evidence is so clear and we really as a world dont have time for all this ##### footing around. Climate change is having effects all over the world. I predict more floods. In Australia eg Queensland they are unprecedented but its going to get much much much worse.

Yes there may be extremes but lets be honest Green extremists are nowhere near as evil as men like Corey Bernardi who frankly shopuld be deported. Preferably to some extremist Muslim regime lol.

Hey Glen I thought you straight guys liked #####...lol. Censored...didnt mean it like that.

Peter I still think the philosophy of the Greens is more important than the poor discretion. I too, as Green as I try to be, have failings. I love travel so I fly. I love animals but I eat fish and chicken. I hate the way we farm our domestics. I think we all fail to totally live up to our ideals.

But I do my best ..I dont eat red meat or kangaroo, I contribute to Green Peace I hand out vote cards for Greens and I live in a very right wing burb so I get lots of abuse, I refuse to drive a car!

I have always hated the Bob Brown attacks. He does not deserve it.

Without Bob there would be no Franklin.I think he is a national hero.

The work the Greens have achieved for a minority party is amazing. Even Glen loves fishing...if the Greens are not at least listened to and some action taken Glen may as well burn his rod.

I accept your predictions for the next election. It will be a land slide, I believe because of a campaign by the media.

WE may well have a Coalition dictatorship ...frankly I would hate any party to have the kind of power Australia is about to hand over to Abbot.

We are about to hand the mining industry over to millionaires. Gina will get it all.

If the ALP had listened to the Greens the mining tax would be generating much much more revenue than the watered down version which is minimal.

As for Labors Broad band at least the Libs wont throw that away. Frankly most Liberals support it. The benefits are already being enjoyed. If the Libs cut that they will have business against them. Fortunately Malcolm though appeasing Abbot has clear intentions.

PeterJ, you used the exp<b></b>ression "unwashed" AGAIN and then asked me what washing I speak of! Well that is the washing (or unwashing) I was referring to.

PeterS, sorry about the bad word filter. The word "pussy" does not come up in conversation very often. I can remove each bad word from the list but.... yes PeterJ is right ...I am a bit lazy about changing it ...partly because it does help me manage the occasional website porn spam attack. They still do happen from time to time.

After experiencing the relatively slow internet over here i am keen on NBN too. Though I suspect it may result in Australia becoming the biggest piracy nation in the world per capita. That could be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view.

As for the floods in Queensland, I would not normally say this but maybe the solution is to "build a dam". Though of course it could later be finished in a time of drought and then everyone will say it was a waste of money. Perhaps they could use the captured water for hydro power. That would be a relatively green outcome. Though of course I appreciate dams can interfere with the biology of river systems (presuming the river systems are not already dammed).

I find the whole global warming argument a difficult one. I still remember to this day I was studying a subject at uni (must be 15 years ago now) and was told about how the earth went through cycles of ice age and warm age. And according to the diagram shown to me, the next ice age was not too far away....maybe a few thouand years away.... Now I rather have global warming than an ice age any day!!!! Maybe my lecturer was wrong about the next ice age but it is always in the back of my mind when people talk about global warming.

As I understand it, there are already dams on the flooding Qld rivers anyway.... so one more dam would not have much impact on the movement of flora and fauna. If it was a purely natural system ...like for example the mitchell river in victoria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_Ri...a)....then i think a dam would not be a popular option.

I am not sure of the dam issue. Of course with recent floods the dams would have been devastating. On the other hand there must be better ways of handling the wasted flood waters.

On the other hand the Greens I think (and I am one of them) have been too quick to reject dams. Of course we need water to fill them.

Trouble is with eery great solution theres a down side.

Desalination is working well over seas and I think its the best solution here BUT I do have concerns.

A bit of a very unsure fence sit on this one for me.

Quite simply I dont know.

Rather leave it top science rather than Tony Abbot or Julia Gillard.

AND NOT BARNARBY JOYCE

You know they had a tidal turbine near the bridge at Phillip Island. It was near the jetty on the island side. This seems to be it:

Also, here is a proposed tidal power project at Portland: http://www.oceanpowertechnologies.com/portland.html

Better still the reactor could be in your home!! hahaha

I think you missed "geothermal" power but that may be deliberate since it is not living up to initial hopes either. What a shame! Seemed like such a great idea. I remember doing a school asignment on the subject when I was at school and it seemed like such a cool idea. That was a very long time ago...!

Nuclear planes might be too heavy!!! Maybe they can have a nuclear train though. That would be sort of similar in size to a nuclear submarine. Though I guess it would be kind of pointless to have a nuclear train given it could just run on an electrified line with power from the proposed preston nuclear plant! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

In the future planes will be nuclear powered in the sense that they are flung into the air using power generated from nuclear power. They will effectively be nuclear gliders! If for some reason they do not glide far enough they can turn on their backup engines.

I'm sure it could fling it to a high speed but the G forces may make the travel rather uncomfortable. So I would recommend all the passengers go to sleep before take off.
