Haydn - The Creation

Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra

Jane Edwards (soprano), Richard Greager (tenor), Stephen Bennet (bass),

conducted by Andrew Wailes.

Saturday 26 May 8.00 pm, Melbourne Town Hall

The Creation, "Die Schöpfung" in the original German, was written between 1796 and 1798 and is Josef Haydn's greatest work. In its composition Haydn was significantly influenced by Handel's great oratorios which he had heard during his visits to London in 1791-1792 and 1794-1795. The Creation was first performed at a private subscription concert in Vienna on April 30 1798. It was recognized immediately as a work of genius and in Vienna alone was performed almost 40 times in the remaining 10 years of Haydn's life. It has continued much loved and often performed to this day as one of the glories of the Western choral tradition.
