Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - Bohemian Rhapsody

16 May 2008

Melbourne Town Hall

Swanston Street

MELBOURNE VIC 3000

This event operates Friday from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

The haunting strains of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 have long passed into film legend for their use in Bo Widerberg’s Elvira Madigan (1967), but this rich and subtle concerto has many other special qualities: a sublime wit, a shining brilliance and a tremendous humanity.

Dvorák’s Seventh is not simply one of the Czech master’s most popular works: in it he strives most fervently for the kind of power and concentration of expression of which Beethoven was the master.

Although on paper its massive forces (including 12 trumpets) suggests a militaristic might, the over-riding impression left by Janácek’s Sinfonietta is of joy and light.

Repertoire

* DVORÁK Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Op.70

* MOZART Piano Concerto No.21 in C major, K.467

* JANÁCEK Sinfonietta

* Alexander Briger conductor

* Amir Farid keyboard
