Australian Grand Prix 2008
#1
We are planning a trip to the 2008 Australian GP and would like suggestions as to where to stay and other helpful hints. Anything is helpful even where not to stay! We will have some extra time maybe 5 or 6 days what should we see? Thanks <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

hi there,

my advice would be to book early because i think all of the hotels near the track get fully pretty quick!

you can get some tips on melbourne hotels here:

I agree - I once saw the Australian F1 in Adelaide & the city was jam packed. Book now, as when you get nearer the event it will also get more expensive.

I'm guessing you've never been to Melbourne before ?

This could be your last chance to see the Grand Prix here. It is not very popular and losing a lot of money.

But if you haven't been, you can't go past Melbourne's bayside. Visit Port Melbourne, St Kilda (check out the fairy penguines) and take the ferry across from St Kilda Pier to Williamstown. A great way to see Melbourne.

Accomodation depends on how close you want to be to the race. When I used to come to Melbourne, I always loved staying at the Victoria Hotel on Little Collins. It is cheap, quaint and very central, highly recommended. Can get a bit hot in summer though. But you're tastes might be very different.

And check out my blog if you are looking for some good value eats.

i suspect a lot of people went to the grand prix once or twice and then got sick of it <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> it is sorta of the same ever time! and the track is fairly flat and boring. it needs a few big hills and more exciting terrain to get people interested i think. either that or give the cars wings and bigger engines!!! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> lol

Hi,

I am new to Melb as well, and wanted to go into F1 2008, but only on the race day itself. SO I guessed I can only get the General Admission. but with it, can I actually view the race? I guessed with it, there is no fixed seating ... and seating is 1st come 1st serve?

Cheers

Yes you can see the race but you won't be able to access the good viewing points such as the pits for example. If you pay for a stand you will be higher up and get a better view. But the ground pass is still OK.
