For Those Who Dont Drink Or Watch Sport
#1
If you don't drink alcohol, don't like sport or hate the cold, give poor old Melbourne a miss unless you are rich. In which case you can buy a trip up north at any time after April when the temp goes under 10 deg. For the rest of us it's Stay inside, potter around the dried up garden (with a coat on) and wait to die. I lived there and if you are young, wealthy, an alcoholic, or a Footy head.. Life is good. If not it can be a cold lonely place.

I love it too, try living in Sydney where you pay twice as much for your car rego, and take twice as long to get from A to B, and breathe in twice as much pollution in the process. Oh and Feel twice as hot and/or sticky on a 40 degree day in summer. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hey Andy,

I totally agree with you. Melbourne is so sport and alcohol driven that if you dont do either of these you are such an outsider and considered a freak.]

Thanks for your opinion!

it also seems to be fairly "coffee" driven these days if that appeals to you.

Well, consider the plight I'm in... Buffalo NY has the following winter temperatures:

Average low: 18 F (-7.5 C)

Average high: 31 F (-.6 C)

American football is worshipped here and our local team has ONE great record that no one else in the history of the sport has obtained - Most Consecutive Trips to the Championship with the most consecuative losses.

We also have more bars than churches and libraries combined.

There's nothing else to do here. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> At least in Melbourne I'll be able to take walks along a beach in the summer. And with a city of more than 3 million people I know I'll find people to do things other than drink and watch sports... I'll brew and paly darts.

hi ikyoto,

not sure what "paly darts" means. is that a USA thing? <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Yeah - it means that I've had too much of my own beer and forgot how to type "play". Eventually I'll have had enough to clear out the damaged brain cells and will be able to type correctly again. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wow' />

I agree completely! I don't watch sport. The other day the footy grand final was on TV but I had completely forgotten about it so i was watching another channel, blissfully unaware of the sporting event of the year!!! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

Well, gimmie a list! I'm tired of living where there isn't anything to do for 6 months but drink and watch sports - Living in Buffalo NY seriously limits out of the house activities.

A city this size, people everywhere, and you don't see anything to do but drink and football? give me a break! call Lifeline - 13 11 14.

the statement was directed at people who posted negative comment in general. the point was there a lot more to life in Melbourne than drink and sport. some people must take what have got here for granted. put a bit of effort in and see what you get.

Are you kidding me? Are there really people alive in Melbourne who don't drink OR watch sport? I've never met one of those ! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I like to watch car racing - sometimes, I like to watch football - sometimes. I love watching the olympics. I like to watch Tour de France - sometimes. I like to watch the tennis sometimes. And I've even been known to watch the Netball or the lawn bowls on Ch 2 on a Saturday evening (when the only other things on TV are cooking shows and I don't have a rivetting book to read) but it all depends what mood I'm in as to if I have a glass of wine. You I wont find me sitting down in front of the TV all afternoon with a permanent drink in my hand though.

OMG I hate watching cricket - that's too much like watching paint dry, or the grass grow.

I also read that alcohol kills brain cells <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> but it doesn't stop me liking a glass of wine or champagne from time to time (ie: one 24 hour period to another - nah, just kidding again)

How could anyone not like watching the Olympics - or the tennis????? C'mon - Anna Kournakova, what's not to like about watching her play tennis, or Roger Federer????
