Where To Live With No Kids
#1
Hey peoples,

I'm a newbie to the forum, and a soon-to-be newbie to Melbourne. I've been looking on the forum for advice on the best suburb to live, but all the people asking seem to be looking for a place to raise their kids. My partner and I aren't planning on children any time soon; we're both young professionals with reasonable incomes and we like to enjoy ourselves.

Inner city is where we're looking, preferably close to the G. Looking at a map tells me somewhere like Richmond or South Yarra would be pretty nice, but I'm looking for some input on the 'culture' that we're looking for. Don't care about schools, or parks, or childcare facilites, but we're very interested in the local drinking holes, convenience shopping and quality (but not too upmarket) dining experiences.

So the question is, what's the best suburb for a young couple that likes to eat out, have a few drinks at the pub and occasionally hit the town?

Are you planning on buying or renting?

If it's Inner city you're looking for I guess you're talking apartments?

Some of the towers near the Crown Casino and the Exibition Centre look appealing to me. I like a good view and by choice, a city view with a sunset would be pretty hard to beat <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' /> . Dunno too much about prices, but about a year ago the "yarra's edge 5" building had apartments for between $500K-$600K depending on level (I guess renting would be between $450-$550 per week).

Not my tower of choice but it gives you a rough price guide. The Eureka towers' apartments start at $1M+ I believe but there are plenty of other towers surrounding it that would be cheaper. Quite a few pubs around there too if I remember correctly, although I'd sooner head to the casino which would be a 5 minute walk from any of those towers. (add about 10 minutes for a lift to arrive though <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> )

i know some people consider "richmond" to be funky and cool and all that stuff. though there are not many apartments and the houses are very expensive nowadays. it is certainly close to the MCG.

you might also consider st kilda. it has a similar reputation for being "cool".

sorry, should have mentioned we're only looking to rent at this stage. After we've been around for 12 months or so and know the area better we'll probably look to buy. Something around the $400/week range preferrably.

The towers you're talking about are in Southbank?

The "yarra's edge 5" tower is, along with about 3 or 4 other towers, not sure what you'll get for $400/week because that whole area is pretty expensive now. Forgotton the suburb (glen will know) but there are more towers near the crown casino and the exibition centre, close to the westgate fwy, and the MacDonalds resturant. For $400/week you might score a 2 bdrm unit there.

There's also some towers at Port Melbourne (not sure of price) but they're close to the tramstop, and trams are quite frequent there.

It's about a 40 minute walk to the city from there.

To be honest, we hadn't really considered the high density places really close in, we were thinking more inner suburb medium density type places... but with the right facilities of course.

Well in that case I reckon your best bet is in and around Port Melbourne and Albert park.

There are pubs all up and down that beachside rd and the nightlife is pretty good too. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

Sounds sweet. I'll give it a look when we come down in a few weeks. Gotta scope the place out I reckon before we commit to anything <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Try St. Kilda; well within your budget and with all the watering holes and dining joints you want

St. Kilda looked nice, but I'm told the smackie population is a concern. Plus it's a bit further out from the City than we were hoping for. Looks like a good place to hang out of an evening though.

We've decided on a nice place in Fitzroy. Lots of nice pubs and eateries, and walking distance to the city. Still probably too many hippies for my liking, but I'm told they'll flee from high-volume Death Metal, so I should be able to survive.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, and maybe I'll see ya on the streets some time.
