Melbourne Dialect
#1
I am in England, writing a best man's speech for a couple who come from Mansfield Nottinghamshire and Melbourne, Victoria, respectively.

I thought I could inject some humour into the speech with some jokes about translating stuff (Mansfield has some strange dialect words and a funny accent).

Could anyone supply me with some genuine pieces of language, terms, turns-of-phrase which are Australian or better, from Melbourne, which would be well-known to the Melbourne guests but perhaps not to the British ones?

Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Bye, from Moopind in England.

That is a pretty hard question!

You have your well known aussie slang like "g'day mate" etc...but I can't think of any Melbourne-specific lingo.

I guess if you made reference to some Melbourne landmarks that might be just as effective. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I suppose you could make something of the "Underbelly" injunction "thingy" More info:

Or, if Victoria can be used: maybe something from the "Ned Kelly" era Clickity Click!

Then or course, the Eureka Stockade might provide a laugh or two Click!

Hopefully this helps <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
