How To Rent A House And Buy A Car When We Arrive
#1
Hi

our family (me, my husband and 3 young children) will be migrating to Melbourne in Oct.

May I know, when we arrive, how do we buy a car and rent a house?

As we would not have started employment upon arriving, what other documents do we need to produce? Will the bank statement suffice?

Also, do we need to get an Australian driver's license before we are allowed to buy a car?

In which order shd we have these done to speed things up?

1) Driver's licence

2) Tax File number

3) Medicare

4) Centrelink

We are excited about moving yet overwhelmed by all the unknowns...hopefully eveything will work out.

Hi there,

Usually you can use the overseas drivers licence for the first 3 months. Better double check here:

As for renting, you may want to read this thread:

We came over recently and used a company called Moving to Melbourne, their website is www.moving-to-melbourne.co.uk . They picked us up from the airport and we stayed in their furnished rental whilst they drove us around different suburbs so we could choose where to live. We chose Carrum Downs it is a lovely area, really peaceful with lots of parks and great schools.
