Bob Hawke was really the last of the original style ALP leaders He understood working folks while not being one.

 

His successors have gradually lost the working folks in their battle with the Greeens for the "left" of politics.

 

The only unions they have true support from are public sector unionists - basically still compulsory members.

Meenwhile the centrist Coalition folks pick up the votes of the middle - and win more than they lose.

 

So Thanks Mr Hawke for the memorires of what a centrist ALP leader could be!

If the centrist Coalition keeps borrowing a trillion dollars and giving it away they will keep picking up votes...

 

But then we will be in default...
