Melbourne has experienced much change in the highend retail scene in the last 5 years. Melbournes best highend shoes like the Santoni norvegese handmades and Mantellassi norvegese handmades have gone from Melbourne now. Even the wonderful Borrelli store (highend suits, accessories and shoes) left Melbourne last year. l hear more highend stores are exiting Melbourne too.



You would think that Melbourne being a major tourist attraction and international city, that we would have better shopping than we do. But it seems people these days are less and less prone to spending high prices for luxury wears. Who spends $1,500 on Santoni shoes these days? Anyone remember those Mantellassi alligator shoes that were selling for over 10K at Borrelli? The problem with Melbourne is that they charge MUCH MORE for luxury goods than most other countries in the world.



Melbournes best suit brands are:



* Oxxford (9K)

* Brioni (5.5K)

* Kiton (8K+)

* St Andrews



Other half decent suits are:

* Zegna (fully canvassed highend)

* Armani (black label)



Melbournes best shoes are:



* Church's english shoes

* Crockett & Jones english shoes

* Ferragamo Tramezza (ignore the regular range)

* Santoni fatte a mano (blake-rapid)





The rest of the brands (Prada, Gucci, Versace, Hermes', Louis Vuitton, Moreshci, Aldo Brue, Grenson etc) are not worth worrying about.







We may not have all the good stuff that America and Europe has, but we certainly have a world class tailor in our city. He will make you anything you like that is the highest quality and will fit you perfectly.

l've got a few Oxxford and a special handmade suit. As for shoes, i'm only buying the Santoni and Church's locally now. Because the shoe selection is so average, i'll be getting most of my shoes made in Germany in future.



The Artioli shoes that retail for 2K are overpriced shoes too. Beautiful finishing and lovely materials, but the construction is not the best. They are shoes that should only be used sparingly.They are NOT handmade as people claim they are, and they are not the best shoes in the world like people claim.

There is no cheapest place. No competition exists in Australia because the brands are highend; retail can charge alot more for this reason.



There is only one brand of higher end shoes that has competition. That is Church's english shoes. They can be had for $1,200 at Henry Bucks, or for $900 at Mc Cleods. ln the U.S.A, the price is as low as $700. Church's are the best shoe in Melbourne these days....they last a long time, are well constructed (won't fall apart for a long time) and are made from high quality leathers.



Cheaney are a decent brand (one of the better shoes in Melbourne). Goodyear welted to o.k standards, and o.k leather, but certainly not as good as some shoes.



Loake are a decent shoe to cut your teeth on and only cheap ($350 - $400). Average leather quality and average goodyear construction, but still a decent shoe.



R.M.Williams aren't all that. Decent, but ceratinly not the best.



Florshiem are best forgotten.

At around the $400 dollar mark you get Sex appeal and hand made quality with great fit. Several lines are extra wide. Mainly baby buffalo uppers and leather soles.Though rubber soles on some. Fast fashion to classics with some hand thonging around the vamp, which makes them look exclusive and expensive.



We also make Anastazi boots and shoes That are better than RMW and possibly your Ian Harrold (which I can highly recommend as worthy buys). The above represent quality at a sensible price and will last you 10 years or more with due care. But if you really want to pull the pud. Oh! and we are direct Importing from a 24 person workshop In Vietnam some realy fine classic 100% leather and casuals with rubber soles . These Run at around $300.We are the only place outside Vietnam that you can get them. Robert

Now many new brands has emerged, but few old still rein the world and Ralph Lauren's Men`s suits are one of them, there is a class of people who still find it best, because of its style and fabric.
