Any Metal Fans Here?

Quote:Well, I must say you do a great job of typing in English Nataly. I would never have guessed that it was your second language.

Thanks!

Quote:Russian? OMG! You probably have the sexiest accent in the world! lol But don't worry about me, I'm married.

Hoho, me too) Still, I wish I had no accent at all( I'll strive for it  <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Quote:I'm sure you'll fit right in, here in Melbourne Nataly, it’s a great place for pretty much anyone, especially us alternative types. I think you'll love it. Although I'm an Aussie (From Canberra – I know I can hear the other Aussies saying Booooo! But I'm not keen on it either) I have been living in the UK, Blackpool mainly, for about 13 years and it sure is a breath of fresh air to get away from the ways of Britain and start living in Melbourne. It really is one of the best places to live, I think.

Sounds perfect to me =) I'm sure there are always heaps of things to do in Melbourne =) And that including whole lot of different gigs! =) Hopefully I'll find many like-minded people there =)

What's pomie accent?

lol, sorry its an English accent. You'll have a lot of aussie slang to learn when you get here Nataly!

Pom or pomie, I believe is short for pommegranite, which is a dark red fruit. Way back in the victorian times a lot of the british migrated to Australia via ship. They used to arrive incredibly sunburned after being pail for so long in a country that more often than not has an overcast/cloudy sky. This is of course before the days of sunbeds and fake tan lol! I think the aussies started calling them pomies after pommegranites because that's what they used to look like when they arrived. Or so goes the more logical theory behind it.

The Poms on the other hand will tell you a different story. They seem to think that POM stand for Prisoners Of Her Majesty. But what about the H? So apparently they think that convicts were named poms first, but then somehow we started calling the English poms instead. Doesn't really add up if you ask me. I just think its the English trying to nick something and turn it around to make it swing in their favour, as per usual.

Wow, that's interesting! Do Australian call themselves Ozzi or is it offensive? Are there any other nicknames for nationalities? =)

Off topic, sorry  <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Yep, we call ourselves Aussies all of the time and are fairly proud of it, I guess. And it is pronounced Ozzi, but it's really annoying when the Yanks (Americans <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Cowboy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':Cowboy:' />) pronounce it how it's spelled and sounding out the double SS instead of the ZZ sound lol! It just sounds really weird when Americans pronounce the word "Ossies."

I guess there are lots of nicknames for other nationalities too, but we have to be very careful about those. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Unfortunately a majority of other nationalities don't like being referred to by their nicknames even when it's not meant in offence. I'm sure there are a few English out there that really hate being called a pom as there are probably also Americans that hate being called yanks.

I feel quite at liberty to throw the word pom around whether people like it or not though. Mainly because I am half a pom myself and a lot of them seem to think it's quite alright to throw the name "Convict" at Aussies, which in IMO is a bit below the belt. [Image: Shame%20On%20You.gif] So tbh I think poms deserve any name an Aussie can throw at them good or bad. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ras.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ras:' />

Who knows someday I might get to tell you some amusing nationality nicknames… erm… offline and where other people can't hear and read. lol <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/gathering.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':gathering:' />

Gah! Why all the emoticons??? What am I doing???

That would be awesome! I'll look forward to it if or when it happens. I wish you luck getting over here. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Meanwhile I'll start learning some tunes on my axe again.

I'm having a string gauge crysis as well btw. lol I'm not sure whether to go with D tuning or switch back to B tuning and get some 11 gauge strings again. Testament normally D tune, but a lot of the stuff I like learning and playing is B.

Ah well... Decisions, decisions...

11? Wow, they are rather thick =) But our guitarists also use such strings X) It sounds more brutal) hehe

By the way, did you say, you play in B tuning? We play in C and it's rather low (in consideration of the normal E tuning), I can't imagine my bass in B tuning x_x The upper string will be too loose, I think  <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Yeah, a lot of death and sludge metal bands use B. Carcass and Arch Enemy have used it and it sounds awesome, but it needs thicker strings to prevent it from sounding too rubberband on a cereal box-like. Or there are bands like Sepultura that cheat by doing Drop D or Drop B, where you tune your guitar in such a way, so you only have to hold 2 strings with one finger to make a powerchord, PAH! Lazyyyyyyyyyyy

I've never tried C tuning though, is that lower or higher set of octaves than B tuning?

I'm not sure what the basists do in bands that B tune though. If they do the same then, yes you'd probably need an even thicker set of strings also! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

one of the best genres we've got..!

It's fast, aggressive, there's plenty of skill in the making of the music.

Its the music with the most emotion I think.

The themes in it appeal greatly to me. Like Folk and Pagan Metal; it makes me reflect on my ancestors since they came from Europe during that era and there are a number of Black, Folk and Viking Metal bands that sing of pre-Christian culture and way of life and I enjoy that.

Metal is not very marketable. Therefore it makes sense to me that the majority of the music is made for the sake of music, not for making money or winning awards or getting onto some charts.

It's a corny and cliché use of the word but I find Metal to be brutal and I love that!

I'm moving to Melbourne in Sept of 2012......looking for friends. Possibly ones who listen to metal. Similar interests are easier to work with. I'm also a giant video game nerd. For a chick I can beat anyone at Soul Calibur.
