Solar farm to integrate pumped hydro storage facility in Australian first with $500m loan

Australia's first renewable energy project to combine solar energy and pumped hydro storage will receive half a billion dollars in funding.

The Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) is planning to provide $516 million for the Kidston solar project near Georgetown in far north Queensland.

It will be one of the largest loans made by the NAIF.

Once built, the project will be the first in Australia to combine solar energy and pumped hydro storage.

Hi Peter.

The water would be pumped upward during the day and released downward at peak demand.

If it goes ahead they want to run a trans line to the grid. As for the climate - that area has a wet and a dry season.

Who owns it - no idea. But it won't be the taxpayers. The thing is, it adds to the overall available power.

And as for setting the price, well presumably their price would be subject to the same conditions as a new coal fired station would be.... so it won't be cheap. But then again, neither will any other new power plant.

Hi Peter.

You think we should be a dam nation? Smile

Why not? Tasmania is exactly that - 95% hydro and the rest is solar, wind, gas. 66 dollars per MW/h. Not bad.

Victoria is 70% brown coal - 108 dollars per MW/h, then 15% hydro and gas - 140 dollars. Something funny there.

Yes, you need more energy to pump up the water than what you get from releasing it downward. No argument there.

Solar can pump the water up - but only during the day - so running the solar to the grid would be a secondary function.

I'm not across all the profiles or protocols they use but the priority for me is increasing the overall amount of available secure power.

From what I've heard renewable energy is to be the New-Clear. So we all get what we want.

An eye catching headline Smile

I hope Bill Shorten gets his campaign right.

This issue will swing a lot of people away from the Tory Tony's when the bills start coming in.

Melting bitumen leaves motorists 'sinking' into Queensland road, destroys tyres

Emergency repairs had to be made to a road in far north Queensland after bitumen melted around car tyres, causing traffic chaos.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads was forced to close the Malanda Millaa Millaa Road near Tarzali on the Atherton Tablelands yesterday after receiving several complaints.

Motorist Bridget Daley said her tyres were covered in bitumen, which had also flown off, striking her bumper bar and snapping it off.

"I was absolutely horrified to find that there was three inches of bitumen coated around all four wheels of my vehicle," she said.

I bet they won't get compensated either.

"Man" burns down house trying to kill spider

remind you of anyone ? LoL

A US man has burned down his home in a botched attempt at killing a spider.

Rather than try to kill the arachnid with a shoe or some rolled up newspaper, the unnamed man decided to create a makeshift flamethrower with a cigarette lighter and a can of spray paint, KOMO News reports.

The homemade weapon quickly set the laundry of the Seattle home ablaze, and the man was forced to flee the house after failing to douse the flames himself.

"I don't want to encourage people to do this, but that's what he did," fire official Kyle Moore said.

Firefighters were unable to douse the flames up close after being told there was a spider in the house.

Still waiting for the vigil for solace to us Christians after the killing spree in Sri Lanka.

I guess it’ll be after the cows come home, or not.

Gosh we did not even get the appellation "Christians" seems we were relegated to Easter prayers or some nondescript not offensive to muslins names!

Or perhaps there were not enough murdered to warrant a candles and tears sit in?

Yes where is Waleed now?? I mean the man doesnt shut up when something happens to muslims

but christians being targeted like this isnt new either this has been happening for some time now but alot more of attacks recently

Around the day New Zealand muslims got attack we had kids in Italy and Nigara being attacked (christians) as well.

It's just that I didn't see any "vigil for solace" for the thousands of non-Christians that were killed / injured / homeless by indiscriminate bombing in Iraq or Afghanistan or other occupied lands.

Equality seems to be a very flexible word when it comes to faith Smile

HI Peter

The events in NZ are a first for that country - Just like Port Arthur here. But over time it'll become another statistic just like the guy who drove a van into a group of Muslims at a Mosque in Britain a couple of years ago.

It's a very small fraction of the total deaths of Muslims prior to that - Pakistan attacks killed far more Muslims but we don't hear about it here - let alone see any vigils. It's no longer a media sensation.

Seems to me it's everyone with a bullseye on their back - regardless of their beliefs.

Hey Peter

6 Years ago our Electricity Bill wouldn't last 6 months - 3 Prime Ministers later he's still there.

"Two left feet Bill" sounds interesting - a lot of his policies are further to the Right than even Tony Abbott's.

Think franking credits and Negative gearing for starters....

His performance has been poor of late but the election is still his to lose.

I'm still trying to find out who's going to win the war within the Coalition after the election...

- is it Progressives? Conservatives? Nationals? It all sounds like a fraud church to me Smile
