I live in Ohio. I am completely in love with Australia. I have been for as long as I can remember. I have never been there and yet I feel this pulling toward the land. I just want to know everything there is to know about living there. My goal is to one day live there. If anyone ouyt there would be willing to talk to me about what it's live there, I would appreciate it.

I'm not asking someone to become my best friend or anything. I just want to get to know the feel of Australia. Just anything that might come to mind, like how the people are, how the weather is, what can you do there, are there good employment opportunities, etc.

Was it all just a lie then? I'd heard that Australians were some of the nicest, friendliest, most generous people in the world. If that's true, then how come no one has even tried to write anything? It makes me sad to think that I was all wrong about such a beautiful country.

It wasn't a lie, msapple. They are some of the friendliest and nicest people of the world from what I've seen so far.

I haven't replied to you before because I'm quite new to Melbourne, so I am not the right person to tell you about living here. I've only been here for 4 weeks now.

However, I can tell you about my little experience and what people have been telling me.

This is a very "no worries" environment, which is awesome! People like to take their time to do their things and no pressures! In terms of work, you'd be looking into a very relaxed thing with a great quality of life.

People are very friendly and this is as multicultural as you can imagine. The city is great (I don't know Ohio tho, so can't tell you the differences). Public transportation works great! I can't you much about the night life so far...

And well, I like it a lot so far. I'm sorry I can't tell you much. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

Thank you Mariana for what info you could give. It sounds just incredible there. i need to visit there first I think, but it sounds just like I'd hoped it would. It sounds just like home to me. Good luck with everything there.

I take it then to mean that sports are very important to the social lives of Australians. This is good to know. Unfortunately, my skills don't seem to lie in that direction. As for making friends, well unless you are like Quadaffi, an evil dictator or someone along those lines, I would be open to being friends with that person. ANy info I can get is useful though. Thanks for all you have told me so far.

I don't really care for evil dictators either. That's why they will never be my BFF. Sorry, I was trying to be funny but I guess I failed. I'm just saying that I'm open to meet anyone and accept them for who they are. I think the more friends you have, the better life is and we all be open to meeting new people.

Thank you Peter J for all the things you have told me. What exactly is the "right" profession though? Yes, we here in Ohio do have both kinds of weather and I can do well with either one although I really don't like horribly hot weather much. However, I'm willing to make the adjustment.

I will ask more specific questions. How are expensive are the prices on goods and services there? Do you need a car to get around, or is there public transportation? Is the job market good? How much of an income do you think you need to live comfortably? By that I mean, having your bills paid and not struggling from month to month? How hard is it to move there? Should you bring anything with you beyond basics? If you don't bring things with you, are they easy to replace? Are the people open to others coming into their country?

If I think of anything else, I will add more. Thank you all.

I'm not sure what a "movable feast" means when it comes to the right profession. That's not a term I've heard before. Can someone explain this term please?

I would appreciate anyone's help on this one. Is there a place where I can get a subscription to Australia and New Zealand magazine? I have been checking here in the US but I can't seem to find anywhere to get even a copy of one. Also, would it even be shipped this far? I'll keep looking, but any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hey Aussies, what's up? I just wanted to say hello and hope everyone has a beautiful day. I'm getting a little goofy right now because I had to take something for my headache, it is quite bad tonight. The meds make me silly though. I wish i were there right now. The festivals going on right now sounds incredible. I'm also a little lonely and sad tonight, the headaches tend to do that to me. Well, g'day to all and enjoy your evening.

It's 3:40am on 5 July. Another day, another headache. Hate taking the migraine stuff, amkes me so tired so I try to just wait it out. Unfortunately, can't sleep either. I just read about a winter festival coming up in Bondi Beach. It sounds glorious. I wish I could be there.

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on when the best time of year is to visit? Are certain places better to visit at certain times of the year?

Right now, Peter, I'm just working retail, you know, shops. If I can ever get things straightened out again with these headaches, I would like to go back and finish my education, get my degree. In what, I'm not sure. I was an English major, but decided teaching wasn't for me. So I need to find something else. I have a little knowledge in a lot of areas, just what to do with it. I know I need more than what I have if I want to make the big move there. Oh well, I will get there sometime. Need to visit first though. I don't want to make such a huge move without checking things out first. That would be really stupid.

Thanks for listening all. Enjoy your day.

thanks for the idea of a visual visit Peter. I'd rather be there in person (who wouldn't) but this will be the next best thing. You have been a big help to me. thank you.

Best wishes back at you,

this has nothing to do with Australia, well in a way it does. My friends and I have a chatroom and our theme song, I guess you could say is new to me but might be familiar to some there. This guy apparently lived there for awhile and I was wondering if anyone else had heard of him. He sings a song called "Shaddap You Face". This thing just cracks me up. Anyone else heard of it? I think his anme is Joe Dolce. He was born here in Ohio, which I didn't know. If you haven't it yet, go to YouTube and listen to it, it's hysterical.

I was surprised that he was from Ohio too. I love the song, I think it's great. Just goes to show that I think could fit in with Australian culture pretty well. Seems like we have the same kind of senses of humor. Sometimes I think I might have been born in the wrong place. The proof might lie with Mr Dolce.

Hello Peter,

Right now my biggest plan is research, research, research. I want to find out as much as I can about Australia. Plan B, not cooking to death from the heatwave going on right now. It is cooler in Hawaii right now than it is in Minnesota. In case you don't know, Minnesota is known for is records amounts of snow it gets every year. It is just crazy with the weather this year. Right now, I'd welcome come cold weather. Could you send a nice cold front this way? Best to you and all your fellow Aussies.

Best wishes,

April
