Welcome Your Majesty

Ok confession.

I am a republican and firmly believe that one day we will have our own head of state.

My only hope is that Australians will reassess the excellent model put forward by Malcom Turnbull with a president elected by two thirds of an elected parliament. The popular vote while sounding wonderfully democratic will mean we will have a millionaire election howver I digress.

Although a staunch republican does not mean I believe we will ever lose our historical and perhaps sentimental ties with Britain.

The current monarch has performed her duties well and in a cynical world has been the epitome of grace and dignity. Shock horror I think she deserves the respect she is given.

When we (inevitably) become a republic we can still be part of the Commonwealth and we can still respect this great monarch.

'Charles on the other hand will never be as popular.

If we did become a republic don't worry Australians will not accept the two thirds model. I liked it as I believe we would have a better chance of having a president of the caliber of some of our Governors General. .

AS a Green I think you know my reactions to your comments lol. Still good on you for presenting your opinion even though I think you are wrong..

It is probably cheaper to keep the queen since another country takes care of her for us. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Charles made some mistakes in love but otherwise I think he is OK.

Our GG's over the years have been pretty impressive, with the obvious exception of Kerr.

The current GG I must say is absolutely brilliant. Her speeches superb.

Glen I believe an historic precedence will be set when the Queen dies, they will pass over Charles for William.

Of course as a republican I hope that does not happen as William is incredibly popular and it will make the republican cause very difficult to win.
