Melbourne Car Incident: Three Dead, Man Arrested After Pedestrians Hit In Bourke Street Mall
#1
Three people are dead and a man has been arrested after a car was deliberately driven into pedestrians near Bourke and Queen streets in Melbourne's CBD, police say.

At least 20 people were injured, some seriously, in the incident that police said was linked to an earlier stabbing in the city's south.

Three people are understood to be in a critical condition at the Alfred Hospital. Two others are in a serious condition.

Six people were taken to St Vincent's Hospital, another six to Royal Melbourne and four have been taken to the Royal Children's Hospital.

The Royal Children's Hospital warned parents to avoid the hospital if their children had less urgent conditions.

Acting Commander Stuart Bateson from Victoria Police said the believed the arrested man drove down the mall at about 1:30pm.

"We have the offender in custody. There is no further threat to the public at this stage," he said.

"We believe this male did some doughnuts at Flinders Street and Swanston Street, turned left into the Bourke Street Mall and deliberately drove into the crowd, continued along the footpath colliding with further pedestrians."

Acting Commander Bateson said the incident was not terrorism related and asked people to avoid the city this afternoon and overnight.

"It is going to take us a really long time to process this scene. Our priority at the moment is with the injured, and it must be that we give them our attention," he said.

"We ask members of the public that perhaps witnessed the incident, if they've left the city, please log your details with Crime Stoppers."

Armed police wearing bullet-proof vests and helmets were scene moving through the area, along with uniformed and plain-clothed officers.

There were also a number of ambulances and paramedics dotted throughout the streets.

Mohammed Minhaz said he saw three people hit by the car when he was waiting at the corner of Bourke and Queen streets.

"I saw a red car coming from the sidewalk hitting people. He just was driving, he didn't stop for anyone. The people were flying," he said.

Mr Minhaz said he saw the car drive up on the footpath then on pedestrian crossing.

"He hit one person on the footpath," he said.

Man arrested linked to Winsor stabbing, police say

Earlier this morning, police were searching for a man believed to be involved in a stabbing at Windsor.

Police were called to Raleigh Street at 2:15am after receiving reports of two men fighting.

One of the men involved in the fight took himself to hospital with stab wounds and is in a serious condition.

Police were searching for the other man.

ABC Radio Melbourne's Raf Epstein said senior emergency services sources have told him the injured man was related to the man arrested by police in the CBD.

Epstein said he was told the man stole a car and drove to Yarraville, in the city's west, before driving over the Bolte Bridge.

He said a woman got out of the car on the Bolte, and has said she was being held hostage. The car then made its way into the city.

His POF (Plenty of Fish) profile was found... as suspected he's a meth head and probably suffering from a mental episode.

Damn shame he was bailed instead of being remanded in a mental ward.

RIP to all deceased. Sad

Sadly, the number of deaths rises to six.

A 33-year-old woman has become the sixth person to die after a car was driven into pedestrians on Melbourne's Bourke Street 10 days ago, according to Victoria Police.

Police said the Blackburn South woman died in hospital just before 7:30pm.
Nine patients remain in hospital and one is still in a critical condition, police said, after 39 people were treated after the incident
