Towns To Visit Out Of Melbourne
#1
Another town I love is Mildura.

Accommodation in Mildura is pretty good but often over priced. The Grand is the best bet and it does have budget rooms. I also suggest Midcity plantation which is not the Ritz but very affordable. The staff are wonderful.

Where ever you stay have breakfast at the Grand. The lambs fry is renowned but if that’s too much for you there are plenty of alternatives.

After breakfast cross the road and look at the fountain and cross the footbridge and relax and admire the river views.

Wander down to the river and stroll. The boat trips are a must but if you are short of time and cash wander along the river towards the loch.

Its worth spending some time exploring the gardens in the loch so cross the little bridge, there is much to see.

There are plenty of options but I suggest you wander to the Rio Vista Museum which is a must see.

Then head back to town for a light lunch at Hudaks bakery. The pies are superb! Make sure you order a loaf of the orange bread to take home!

After lunch stroll to a little known gem.

The Langtree Hall Museum was Mildura's first public hall built in 1889 and is an important link in Mildura's Heritage. Its located at 79 Walnut and it’s a delightful old building with an impressive collection of international dolls as well as fascinating memorabilia about Mildura. The staff are always wonderful to chat to.

The rest of the afternoon just stroll the streets and the malls or I suggest back down to the river with a good book and relax.

There’s plenty of great restaurants for dinner but you must not leave without trying a Mallee burger! The van is in Deakin so grab a burger and their stunning golden chips and sit in the rotunda over the road!! You might be lucky enough to see a performance at the arts complex.

Well that's one of mine. Might be fun to share some of yours!

Thanks for this experience posted here. I only had been to Mildura twice: one for the desert photo trip; the other for the September wild flower photography event. Still it is 5 hour drive for which I consider a significant driving distance for the dedication of visiting a regional centre.

Any chance for the Murray river cruise? Not sure if there was any difference between the river cruise there and Swan hill one...

If you cannot make it to Mildura then Echuca is closer and also on the murray and also has paddle boat cruises. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Yeah, Echuca is closer. Just the town does not have good food to dine in <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

Ah you must have gone to the same place we did. We waited for over an hour for breakfast ended up just walking out. The town complained about the lack of tourists.. simple the accom is over priced. Pity as its a sweet place.

It is catch 21. Good reputation and attractions take time to develop. Traveler satisfaction is the only way to spread good word...

There is an excellent fauna park not far from Echuca. I think the movie Sharps museum might have gone..it was great.

Last time we were in Melbourne we took a day out to drive to the Gippsland area and spent the most of the day in Rosedale. It's a lovely little place - very neat and tidy and with some interesting shops. True to its name, there are roses all over the place - some lovely red ones growing along the median strip in the main street. It's also worthwhile visiting the railway station, even if you're not catching a train - it's like stepping back in time, and the gardens are magnificent.

We had lunch at the Old Rosedale Bakery - good (but not exceptional) food, good value, friendly service and clean. I would instead recommend having a tea or coffee or a light meal at the Victoria Rose Tea Rooms though, which are in a large old house on the outskirts of town. The whole town has the sort of relaxing laid back feel that you can only get in country towns.
