Japan (as an example) does not have a welfare system.
Work for it or do without they say.
These are possibly the 5 best sentences
you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half
is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work
because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Welfare is good - it means taking care of those less fortunate than you. Welfare systems on the other hand leave a bit to be improved.
Â
Unfortunately all systems can be rorted and wefare is no exception - that's not the fault of Welfare - it's a failing of systems.
Â
Equally unfortunate is the propensity for some to want to bludge on others so that their grasping tiny minds can continue to laze away their lives.

That said there is something unDarwinian about allowing failing species to survive and propagate.

Aaaaaaah that's one of those "the science is never in typeÂ

Quote:That's news to me because last time I checked the welfare bill in Japan is 1/5th of Govt expense.

Australia is probably more generous but it doesn't adhere to any of those 5 sentences. And that's probably because those lines have been circulating the globe for more than 30 years and have little to do with Australian history and even less to do with our future. Our compulsory superannuation scheme is one example.
We aren't finished yet

Agreed!!
Â
It's much the same as the "science is never in" thought, they have to be true because life = change - hopefully change for the better. :notworthy:

Always need welfare, just need a better system that stops rorting and bludging on ordinary taxpayers.

For intance those who refuse to save for a rainy day and spend what they have on frivolity - gambling, drug use, having a good time now.

Aaah but the Economics Professor understands human behaviour and what they will do without appropriate stimulus.
Â
Inappropriate stimulus cannot acheive worthy results.
