Now in its 4th year, the festival comes to Melbourne with a lineup of more than twenty films, the most diverse and exciting showcase of Indian cinema ever presented in Australia. The festival features a retrospective of the films of Indiaâs most iconic filmmaker, Mr Yash Chopra, and a selection from the most mainstream commercially successful Hindi films to the most experimental and critically acclaimed films coming out of India at present.
Opening night gives the audience the choice of two stunning films - the 1976 classic Kabhi Kabhie (Sometimes), presented by Mr Yash Chopra which stars a young heart throb Amitabh Bachchan in a multi-layered family love story across generations; and Rang De Basanti - a tribute to the freedom struggle told through the eyes of the new generation starring an incredible cast headed by Aamir Khan.
The festival program showcases the diversity of modern Indian cinema with films including:
Kabhie Alvida Naa Kehna - A Bollywood masterpiece
Fanaa - Part romance, part electrifying thriller
Bluffmaster - A slick and gripping thriller
Ek Anabee - All-action thriller, starring Amitabh Bachchan as the man with nothing to lose, until he forges an unlikely friendship with an eight year-old girl who gives his life new meaning.
Being Cyrus - Psychological thriller and experimental film, starring Saif Ali Khan as a stranger who becomes part of a Parsi family living in a remote hillstation.
Chup Chup Ke - Priyadarshanâs comedy of mistaken identity
15 Park Avenue - Award-winning filmmaker Aparna Sen is back with an incredibly powerful and haunting portrait of two sisters
Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (I did not kill Gandhi) - Nine-time national award winner about a retired teacher who is losing his memory, but his memories start to fade, a childhood trauma surfaces â a memory of being accused of murdering Gandhi.
Omkara - Based on Shakespeare's 17th century classic Othello, the film is set against the backdrop of political warfare in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh. Omkara follows one man's descent into sexual jealousy and the destruction wrought by blind obsession.
