Driest October in 92 years - Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne has just recorded its driest October for 92 years!
Only nine millimetres of rain has fallen in Melbourne during the month of October. The long-term average is 67 millimetres!
Melbourne experienced its earliest 35+ day on record on the 12th of October. At the other extreme, snow fell in the Dandenong Ranges down to 400 metres above sea level. It has certainly been an extreme month for weather.
The cause of the extreme weather is an El Niño event combined with unusually cold water in northern Australian/Indonesian seas. This combination is leading to the sinking and drying of air over Australia, resulting in clear skies, hot days and cold nights.
