The 50th Anniversary celebrations for the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games are not to be missed. All of Australia's 13 remaining gold medallists including Dawn Fraser, John Devitt and Murray Rose will be there. There are plenty of opportunities for the public to re-live and learn about the Games.



Events include '56 Returns to the G', Melbourne 50 Years On Exhibition, 'The athlete as God' photographic exhibition at the City Gallery, Post Master Gallery, Commemorative Plaque unveiling at the MCG, Olympic Village Festival and breakfast with James Wolfensohn.

Welcome Reception – Saturday 18 Nov 06

A welcome reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne will be held for all 1956 Olympians & their guests.



'56 Returns to the 'G' – Sunday 19 Nov 06

'56 returns to the 'G' is the Golden Anniversary Celebration at the MCG for the public to enjoy. '56 Returns to the 'G' will see elements of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies such as the military bands, the FE Holdens, John Landy reading the Oath and Ron Clarke relighting the Cauldron and of course the 1956 Olympians! The celebrations will begin with gates opening at 1.45pm for a 2.30pm start and will run until approximately 4pm.



There will also be recent Olympians and ethnic, cultural and artistic entertainment. A gold coin donation is all it will cost to re-live the spectacle and be a part of history.



Optional Golf and Wine Trip – Monday 20 Nov 06

Travelling just out of Melbourne, the golfers will be left to enjoy the hospitality of the Heritage Golf Club whilst the wine lovers will visit wineries in the renowned Yarra Valley.



Celebration at Ballarat (Rowing venue) – Tuesday 21 Nov 06

This trip will celebrate Victoria's second Olympic City Ballarat. As the venue for rowing, canoeing and kayaking the City of Ballarat will be hosting a commemorative ceremony on Lake Wendouree to celebrate the 50th Anniversary.



Breakfast with James Wolfensohn - Wednesday 22 Nov 06

1956 Fencing Olympian and former Chairman of the World Bank, Mr James Wolfensohn, will be the keynote speaker at an exclusive breakfast on Wednesday 22nd November 2006 at the Town Hall.



Starting 7am, don't miss this rare opportunity to hear James speak whilst in town to celebrate his involvement in the 'Friendly Games'. Commemorative Plaque unveiling at MCG & Venue Tour – Wednesday 22 Nov 06

This Museum is one of only four accredited Olympic Museums internationally and on Wednesday morning, there will be a ceremony acknowledging the MCG as the site of the 1956 Olympic Games as well as the generous donations that the IOC and the many Olympians have made to the Olympic Museum.



Golden Anniversary Reunion Dinner – Wednesday 22 Nov 06

The finale of the celebrations, this black tie dinner will be held in the prestigious Palladium Room at the Crown Casino Complex; venue of the Brownlow Medal and Logies Awards.



With over 1500 people in attendance this will be an exciting and poignant culmination of a week of fantastic celebrations. Please note that tickets have SOLD OUT for this event.



Olympic Village Festival - Saturday 18th November

The current Olympic Village community in Heidelberg West invite the public and anyone connected with the 1956 Olympics to return to the site that began life as the athlete's village for the games. As well as being an exciting celebration with entertainment and food, the village festival will also offer opportunity to reminisce - photos, memorabilia, stories and tours of the village.



The festival runs 10am - 5pm, with a special welcome for 1956 Olympians from 11am - 12.30pm.
