Sustainable Living Festival Melbourne 2007

Australia's largest sustainable living event is on again from 16 - 18 February 2007 at Federation Square in Melbourne. The event will showcase leading examples of sustainable living in Australia. The Sustainable Living Festival will draw together a wide variety of displays, exhibits, artworks, performances, demonstrations and workshops to inspire a sustainable culture.

Last years festival was a huge success, largely due to the team of 250 volunteers who offered to help out. This year, volunteers are again being sought to fill roles such as Web Support, Hub Advisors, Talk Tent Hosts, General Production Assistants, Technical Assistants and Stage Assistants.

If you would like to volunteer for one of the available positions you can do so on the Sustainable Living Festival website: http://www.slf.org.au

Highlights in 2007:

Victoria's Nature: A Weather Report

Victorian Natural Parks Association

Speaker(s): Rob Gell, Roger Jones, Bruce Beatson

Description: This event will inform and inspire about the need to reverse the crisis facing Victoria's bushland habitats, and the additional urgency given the climate crisis.

The Ethics of What We Eat

Vegetarian Network Victoria

Speaker(s): Peter Singer

Description: In The Ethics of What We Eat Peter Singer and Jim Mason take a standard meal enjoyed by three American families and trace the ingredients back through the production process to see what ethical issues arise.

Australia's Energy Future in a Changing Climate

Friends of the Earth

Description: Australia is at an energy crossroads. The growing recognition of the impacts of climate change forces us to choose between divergent energy futures comprising some combination of fossil fuels, nuclear power, renewable energy sources, and energy efficiency/conservation.

This forum aims to explore the options and issues in some debate and to go beyond the set-piece sterile debate format.

Sustainable Transport: Visions for Victoria

Going Solar

Speaker(s): Stephen Ingrouille

Description: Stephen's talk will present some innovative sustainable transport ideas and report on his findings from a trip in November 2006 to the West Coast of America.

Positive Solutions to Climate Change: Putting the Inconvenient Truth into Action

Village Well

Speaker(s): Gilbert Rochecouste

Description: This will be a one hour dynamic interactive presentation of Al Gore's new climate change material combined with the best Melbourne/Australian examples of positive change on a community, cultural and business level. This will be an interactive, participatory, inspiring and engaging presentation

Peak Oil: What Is It, Who Is At Risk and What Can We Do About It?

Institute of Sensible Transport

Speaker(s): Phil Hart, Kate Colvin and Elliot Fishman

Description: Peak Oil is an increasingly common term used to describe the point at which maximum oil production is reached. Hear former Shell engineer, Phil Hart explain the basics of Peak Oil. Kate Colvin has been involved with groundbreaking research on the social and economic implications of high fuel costs. Focusing on low income, outer suburban and rural and regional Victoria, Kate explains how high petrol prices are hitting marginalised communities the hardest. Hear Elliot Fishman explain what governments and individuals can do to reduce oil dependence.

Cyclovia: Life to the Streets

Cyclovia

Description: Cyclovia means Life to the street! Imagine roads with barely a car insight and people of all ages walking, cycling, rollerblading or pushing a pram. That is a Cyclovia. During a Cyclovia, cars are not allowed to drive along the selected road but are still able to cross at designated intersections. The first Cyclovia in Australia was held on 28 May 2006 in Moreland, Victoria. Over 5,000 participants attended this great day. Cyclovia will run once again in 2007 in conjunction with the Sustainable Living Festival.

Removing Our White Blindfolds

Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation - ANTaR Victoria

Speaker(s): Jacinda Kelidon

Description: The white blindfold symbolises how non-Indigenous Australians are so often blind to how racism and a lack of respect for Indigenous cultures and communities impacts on Indigenous people. By removing our white blindfolds, we are making a commitment to "seeing things differently" and working in solidarity with Indigenous people.

The white blindfold event at the Sustainable Living Festival will echo the white blindfold ritual held in Melbourne Town Hall in August 2006 which had over 200 participants.

Slow Food - Smokin' Eels: Lessons from the Gunditjmara

Slow Food Victoria

Speaker(s): Kelly Donati, Daniela Mollica, Dr Heather Builth, Jimmy Onus and Naomi Ingleton

Description: What is eco-gastronomy, and why does it matter? Join Daniela Mollica and Kelly Donati from Slow Food Victoria and explore the foundations of Slow Food, the not-for-profit organization founded in 1989 that strives to counteract industrial food and agriculture, the disappearance of local food traditions and our increasing disconnection from the food we eat. Slow Food needles our conscience to ask where does it come from? How does it taste? And what is the future of food on this dry continent?

This is no ordinary cooking demonstration... We delve into the Slow philosophy by following a uniquely Australian food from production to consumption. Dr Heather Builth, archaeologist, and Jimmy King Onus, Gunditjmara elder, offer insights into the cultural, spiritual, ecological and economic significance of smoked eel production, a complex food tradition which sustained the Gunditjmara people of southwest Victoria and their ecosystems for millenia. Naomi Ingleton shows us how to prepare this healthy, delicious food product that is now under threat of disappearing. The session will inspire you to think differently about Australia's food landscapes and to reflect more deeply on the implications of our industrial food systems in the context of drought and climate change.

Sai Potter

Sai Potter Music

Description: Sai's guitar mastery intrigues audiences - Strong, driving, swirling psychedelica, with rock patterns that mystify the ear. His lyrics delve passionately and honestly into the surreal poetry of the everyday. A must see ... LIVE!!

Kanyini

Reverb Vilm

Producer: Melanie Hogan

Description: KANYINI is a story told by an Aboriginal man, Bob Randall, who lives beside the greatest monolith in the world, Uluru in Central Australia.

Based on Bob's own personal journey and the wisdom he learnt from the old people living in the bush, Bob tells the tale of why Indigenous people are now struggling in a modern world and what needs to be done for Indigenous people to move forward.

A tale of Indigenous wisdom clashing against materialist notions of progress, this is not only a story of one man and his people but the story of the human race.
