Moving To Melbourne - Need Advice!
#1
Hi,

Myself and family are emigrating to Melbourne once our visa comes through and I am hoping to get some advice. I am wondering what the best suburbs are for government primary schools? I have done a little research and am liking the look of :

Bentleigh

Bentleigh East

Cheltenham

Ormond

McKinnon

Highett

(The houses in these suburbs are within our price range for buying)

We also like Sandringham, Hampton, Brighton East, Camberwell (but these are perhaps a little too expensive in terms of what we want).

Can anyone advise on what would be the best suburb out of these? Our budget is $500,000 and we would be wanting a 3-bed minimum house.

Also, I have a slight fear of spiders! I have been researching this as I was considering not emigrating because of this but I have been reassured that you rarely see 'deadly' spiders. I know white tails are pretty common there - do you see much of them indoors? In this department, which suburbs should be avoided in terms of being too close to bush/parklands?

Thanks for any advice!

hi jill,

first up i would recommend you visit the following website to get detailed maps of the area you want to buy in.

http://www.street-directory.com.au/

these maps can help you to see where the bushland and parks are. i think you may get more snakes near bushland (if it is a VERY LARGE park on the outskirts of melbourne)... i have never heard of there being more spiders near parks etc. who told you that?

we have a fair few white tail spiders. they are fairly stupid and they tend to climb walls up to the ceiling where they are easy to spot and kill with fly spray. most people in melbourne don't worry about them. and the dangerous ones like red back spiders rarely enter homes. they like dark dingey places like outdoor sheds and sitting under blocks of concrete etc. i don't think i have ever seen one inside the house. if you are worried you can seal up the windows and use fly screens to keep out the bugs. we do get the odd cockroach..not sure if you are scared of them? <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

in terms of suburbs for schools, i guess you could look at the following page to get some ideas where the schools are:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_schools_in_Victoria

they are basically everywhere but you will find them probably more in the outer suburbs since younger families tend to live further from the city since the housing is cheaper.

you probably know this already but http://www.realestate.com.au is a fairly good site to check out houses. you can view them on a map too which is handy.

the following website will show you where the jobs are:

hope that is of some help, cheers, glen

Hi Jill

My husband and I are also emigrating to Melbourne as soon as are visa's come through. I am also a teacher and am looking into finding a job out there. Where abouts are you emigrating from ? Its quite an exciting move, but kind of scary too! We've got lots to sort out still, but we too are looking into areas to live in Melbourne. My husband has got intouch with an agent in London (thats where we currently live) who deals with properties and locations in Melbourne - dont know if he will be of any help! You can also purchase a report from the website www.anewlifeinmelbourne.com. The website its self is quite good too.

hi misha, you can compare prices with your local agent and the real estate website i mentioned (www.realestate.com.au) above to see if he is giving you a good price on a house in melbourne.

best of luck, glen
