i drive a commodore! its a GM car. they are probably the most common larger car in australia so easy to get parts etc and they go pretty good! if money was no object i really don't know what i would buy...i am kinda happy enough with my commodore <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> though a few more kilowatts would not go astraySmile

They are going to be importing the Commodore as they have been importing the Romero here as a Pontiac GTO. I love the Holden line of vehicles!

yeah that was big news over here! aussie's love to be able to export a car...makes us feel very special <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> please buy one! LOL

it cost over a billion dollars to develop that range of cars! so they must be good! (you would hope so at least)

They are undoubtedly excellent cars. My only qualm of course would be that they are importing it under the Pontiac name. Pontiac typically were cars driven by the lower class of society, those who tend to live in trailor parks. Luckily is has undoubtedly helped out the Pontiac brand name by leaps and bounds with the GTO. Unfortunately when the GTO (Ramaro) first came here sales were horrible and they replaced the 5.7L engine with a 6.0L engine then eventually stopped selling them all together. Hopefully they will have a new strategy when the commodore is brought over as a Pontiac Grand Prix.

i wonder if that 5.7 litre engine is the same engine used in the previous model of the commodore. Apparently they had some trouble with it because of excessive clearance in the cylinders...also it failed to meet new emission standards.

The 5.7 litre engine is a very popular engine used by GM "muscle" cars, and is known as the "LS1".

But you might be onto something there with the 6.0 litre engine which is known as the "LS2", which is now more used in the V8 platforms here in America as a standard.

yep I have heard reference to LS2 before. small world hey! i didn't realise they use the same engines everywhere!

the engine in my car is an ecotec V6 (3.8 litre). its about 154 kW from memory. goes very nice! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

In my garage? Um... the gym. It's where I keep my treadmill and weights and bag and pads and whatnot.

In my DRIVEWAY, I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Delta Eighty-Eight LSS.

What I'd like is a 1970s Dodge Charger. If you've ever seen the Dukes of Hazzard, the General Lee is more or less the make and model I want, although I'm not exactly a Dukes fan.

Although I do like the Hummer H2, just because it's such a big "###### YOU" to all the environmental freaks I run into out here. Oh, your car gets 80 miles to the gallon? Cool! Mine gets eight. You lose. ####, we all lose.

i have never heard of oldsmobile before. i looked them up and it looks like General Motors has recently phased them out.

sounds like they are still providing parts though which is good.

i have seen plenty of dodge chargers around in australia. though they are getting rarer as time goes on of course.

I love my Mr2 turbo although it costs me a lot to run - always needing work done.

On my drive at the moment I have the new Fiat Punto Grande! Went and treated myself to it last month!

I think if money was no object, id still stick with the punto, id just get one with all the mod cons!!

hmmm... i drive a 1990 holden commodore (which is beginning to show its age a bit), but if money was no object, i'd like a red one of these:

My 1999 AU Ford. Hey I love Fords, no disrespect to the holden lovers lol. If I had more money, I'd just keep my AU and put some nice add ons and keep her engine maintained. My other car is an old 1970 VW beetle and that ones also my other favourite and keeping her too.

hi gypsy snail, it is good to see someone who likes the AU. It was not a very popular car..mainly because of the funky headlights.... but i think mechanically they are very good cars.

i am in the commodore camp myself atm but i would happily switch to a ford when my car runs out of steam (should be quite a few years away though)

yes, the au falcon didn't go down very well when it was released, but i could never see what was so bad about it. it was just .... different - and maybe too much so for falcon customers. the styling has not really dated as much as some of its contemporaries - i've been seeing a few of them around lately and i think it still looks pretty good, although i wouldn't say it's my favourite car. my guess is that ford's customer base is fairly conservative and it was just a little bit too much of a change for them.

i prefer the later BA, BF models. they are still conservative but they lose the daggy headlights at least <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

but if you're talking about really good looking cars, you can't go past something italian.....

I like both the Holden's and Fords.

The AU was OK in the XR6 form with its quad headlights, but the rear lights let the poor thing down a bit.

The competing Commodore (VT/X) even now looks pretty good, I thought it was strange how they ditched the nice smooth lines in favour of the sharp angular VY, and to a lesser extent the VZ. The new Ford (FG) is evalutionary in its looks - so nothing spectacular - then again the BA-BF models look pretty good too...
