hi ginger,
in the city, most people would go up the Rialto Tower so they can get the bird's eye view of the city.
also, if you like aquariums, i would definitely go to the Melbourne aquarium as its a very good one.
and i guess you should pay to go see an aussie rules football match too since that is very Melbourne!
a bit further out of town, i would definitely go and see the penguins at Phillip island (if you like cute animals) and visit Healesville Sanctuary to see all the native Australian animals.
cheers, glen

The immigration museum is under rated. Its a great attraction. Well worth visiting. There was a special exhibition on the Afghan people who have been here for longer than many. Not sure if its still on.
The main museum near the beautiful Exhibition building just got the annual tourism award and after a pretty shaky start it improves all the time.
Oh also wander round Fed square.. there is a wonderful racing museum. Its brilliant!!

Two attractions that stood out for me from my last visit were the National Gallery of Victoria (is this paid or free? I can't remember if I paid anything or not) and captain Cook's Cottage in Fitzroy Gardens, which, fascinating though it is, is not captain Cook's Cottage at all - it's captain Cook's parents' Cottage...

The top PAID tourist attractions in Melbourne? I agree it's a hard one to answer. However, I think the Melbourne Museum should be on the list, along with the Immigration Museum and Scienceworks. I would also include Melbourne & Werribee Zoos.
