if you're interested in looking at historical photographs of melbourne (and the rest of victoria too) you should have a look at the state library of victoria's picture collection, which can be searched and viewed on their website http://sinpic.slv.vic.gov.au/cgi-bin/Pwebr...&PAGE=First. not only are there old photographs, but there are drawings, etchings and paintings too. of course, viewing a website is not as rewarding an experience as visiting the library in person, but it's a lot easier to access (especially if you don't live in melbourne!).
there is also a commonwealth government site, picture australia, which not only brings together all the various state collections, but has present day photographs sourced from flickr as well: http://www.pictureaustralia.gov.au/index.html.
