Snow dusted parts of regional Victoria on Tuesday as temperatures plunged and a strong cold front sent a shiver through the state.

While the white blanket was nothing new for eastern Victoria's alpine region, snow also blanketed Ballarat, Lancefield, Macedon, Daylesford and other towns north-west of Melbourne.

Snowfalls were also expected as low as 400 metres in the Dandenong Ranges, east of Melbourne on Tuesday evening, while temperatures in the city hovered around six degrees celsius at lunchtime, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said.

"This is not an unprecedented event, though it is a bit unusual to get such a reasonable amount of snow in areas like Woodend and Daylesford," senior forecaster Dean Stewart said.

Melbourne dropped to a shivering 6 deg. at midday. But an icy wind chill means it feels much colder on the skin.

The mercury peaked at a miserable 9.2 deg. at 9.48am - making it the coldest day since July 9, 1998, when we endured a maximum 8.9 deg.
