Melbourne Newspapers.

Well the newspaper war has hotted up with the Age downsizing!

What about the online papers?

I have a Herald Sun online subscription.

I thought what a great idea, I now can read my favorites when I am out of Aus!

No luck as when I went to England awhile ago, the Herald Sun would not let me access it from there!

For me the subscription is useless. I can read everything in Aus in the normal paper much better than on line.

I noticed they changed the format of the age news website recently. It is still OK but there are more adverts and it is a little harder to find the "Victoria" section. I mainly read the age online rather than the herald sun online because I thought their website was easier to navigate. PLus it is easier to type theage.

Yes I was always amazed at how dog breakfasty it was! Maybe they were too busy writing news and no one had time to do the website formatting/layout.

Sadly I think its a no win. I shall miss the papers but I really think its all over. Maybe the Age week end might survive.

I cannot bring myself to read the Sun Herald and the Australian.

I read magazines. I mainly read computer and gardening magazines <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Sometimes I read photography magazines but I normally borrow them from the public library.

Today I bought a magazine rack. Its a very collectable piece and I got it at a bargain price.

Odd purchase but its a real forties piece I could not resist. Got it for five dollars!!! Where.. no way will I tell lol. I know I saw similar in antique shop for $250.

Trouble is I rarely buy mags. I get a journal from the zoos club I am in, my Green mag which is now going on line, and thats it.

Nearly all the things I subscribe too are now on line.

I guess its good after all it will I hope save paper and who knows forests.

I wobnder if TV week is still sold? It must be but I never met any one who buys it. Womens Weekly etc?

I used to read The Weekly Times.

I guess thats gone.

The new Age seems ok but I wonder if its on ts last legs. As I said I cant read the red neck papers... sorry.

Oh and COMICS??? who reads comics?

I used to love them.

I guess thats another dead art form.

Oh well sign of the times.

Remember the movie programs you got at the pictures?

I don't remember movie programs. I imagine they would have said very little if they were only showing a handful of movies at any particular time? Did it give you the movie plot and spoilers?

They were pretty impressive Glen.

They had lots of pics and cast list, full credits and lots of tit bits and info. Very collectable today.

I have quite a few. Not highly valuable but predict in the years to come they will be worth quite a bit. Still its just a prediction.

When I was in high school I used to read these asterix comic books.

I am not sure if I was the only one that liked them!

The only other comic at the time was the one called "MAD" and I never really got into that one.

Yeah she probably was right.

I actually bought a copy of Asterix in german (I went on a holiday to germany many, many years ago). I wonder where I put it. Perhaps it is time to clear out the cupboard and get rid of this stuff on ebay!

I think Melbourne newspapers are all doomed. The recent bias in reporting in relation to the election is a nail in the coffin for them.

Who wants to buy a newspaper that is biased?

And the recent paywalls going up on newspaper websites will further shrink their market share. Why pay for biased news when there are other free sources of equally biased news?

You are very brave Glen.

I think the bias has been unbelievable especially from the Australian. Murdoch runs the country and history will recall the treatment our first and possibly last female Prime Minister with shame.

The Age has tried to show some balance but like you I think the days of news papers are numbered.

Of course bias can depend on what side of the fence you are on but it will be interesting to see how long they give the incoming (inevitable I think) Abbot Gov a honeymoon period.

This election is going to be seriously flawed. I think we will see the end of the Greens and while some will no doubt think this is a cause for celebration I fear for the end of the big picture.

I am not clear what the Liberals seriously plan to do about climate change. The policy looks incredibly simplistic.

As I write this I see the Liberal logo above.

Yes I did see some political advertising appear on the melbournechat site during the campaign. They must have had lots of money to burn!

I think the greens will survive. They have still got quite a few members at State level (not just in Victoria) so they are still getting plenty of media coverage. And lots of young people will still flock to them.

Hope you are having a good time overseas.

Cheers, Glen Smile
