and here's a slightly different puzzle - when i was in melbourne last, i visited a place that i would like to go back to again, but i can't remember what its name was - it had a railway station (below street level) and trams (for some reason it seemed only to be old trams running here) that ran down the main shopping street which had some fascinating if slightly run down shops (including an antique market, second hand shops, op shops and a pie shop/cafe that looked like it was straight out of the 1950's) - any idea which suburb it is?

hi helen, the train stations i can think of that are below street level (and outside the CBD) are camberwell, box hill and hawthorn. I am sure there are plenty more I don't know about.

Do any of those train stations sound familiar? <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

i don't think so - i can't remember going to any of the places you mention. i might be wrong about the railway being below street level, but i'm pretty sure there were steps to get to it. whatever this place was, it was mentioned in one of those pamphlets you get from the tourist information centres in connection with second-hand and antique shops, which is why i went there. the antique market was not a marketplace as such, rather it was one of those centres converted from an old large shop (something like the one in south dowling street in surry hills if you've ever been to sydney)

looks like they're different types of markets from what i saw - maybe i should have called it an antique centre rather than an antique market. i recall though that there was a market selling fresh produce and delicatessen goods there too, but i was there on the wrong day for it - maybe i'm thinking of prahran - i checked the street map out and it looks like it is - is williamsons's pies and pasties an old family business that has been there for about 50 years? - it sounds like it might be the pie shop i was talking about.

i tried to look up the pie shop you mentioned and could not find any useful info about it. i haven't spent much time in Prahran and and i haven't had a chance to go to the market or the pie shop. but if i ever do go i will definitely stop and get a pie! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
