Melbourne Computer Trader And Melbourne Swap Meets Close Down
#1
Hi everyone, here is a quote from the comtrader.com.au website prior to them taking the website down completely.

Quote:Announcement

Max and Dorothea Morton, the owners of Technology Supermarkets Pty Ltd and Freetrader Publications Pty Ltd, have decided to forthwith cease trading the business of those companies, which are as follows:

Computer Swapmeets

The Australian Computer Trader website and magazine

Max and Dorothea have been receiving a significant amount of harassment by lawyers acting in relation to the sale of counterfeit goods at the swapmeets and by Computer Trader. They have found the allegations and threats of legal action against them to be very stressful and detrimental to their health and general well being. The allegations are untrue and the threats are without foundation.

Max and Dorothea have always been at pains to operate their businesses within the law and with integrity and transparency. They thank their staff and customers for their support over the past sixteen years.

This is pretty tragic news for the computer enthusiasts of Melbourne. Hopefully someone will agree to take over the reigns and keep the swap meets alive as they have become a Melbourne Icon.

Regards, Glen

As far as I know it affects every swap meet that was happening all across the state.

Hey guys, I thought the swap meet at Caribbean Gardens was run but a different management group. However my understanding was that the Caribbean Gardens market was being sold so the market will disappear whenever the sale goes through. I was there a few weeks ago and there was quite a few computer stalls but they are not as cheap as the proper swap meets because there isn't that much competition.

you have to be naive not to know that there were few stalls selling counterfeit products or they turned a blind eye, $30 for Adobe CS 3, oh but its a demo with all the cracks??. i am sad to see the computer swap meet close due to some bad operators, but it was inevitable.

Certainly seems like a loss to Melbourne. Are there any alternatives available, ran by similar groups?

it would have been easy to just say "don't sell software" and then the legal threats would probably go away.

oh well, i guess they felt it was important to put their foot down but eventually they succumbed to the pressure in the end anyway.

i hope someone else will take over and keep them going!!!!! so long as they have no software sales it should be all smooth sailing!

as far as alternatives go, the only one I am aware of is the Caribbean Gardens market.

Does anyone know of any other computer swap meets?

I definitely believe that the competitors created the excuses because Max and Dorothea Morton gave a easy place for comsumers to find cheap stuffs. I bought my computers and some stuffs from the people who put the information on the website. They are working pretty good.

Anyway, I would like to say thanks to Max and Dorothea Morton. Maybe I'm going to create a website for free trading. Obviously I should put the server in overseas. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

it looks like boxhill is on for sunday 23/9 ....GREAT

it has been said that springvale got raided for dvd films only ........

i hope they will keep the computers and parts running in some sort of

way as the shops charge too much for the same thing .......

to loose this would not be good .... just for the sake of some little things

hi das and neo,

yes i think it would be terrible if the whole market ended just because of a few dodgy dvds!!

the majority of the stalls have always been hardware-based and that is the market's strong point.

hopefully we will hear soon whether someone else will take over the swap meets. if you hear anything please let us know!

cheers, glen

the raid at springvale was NOT for dvd's it was on ( Wii ) software copies....from nitendo......

the next is 30 th sept ....at spring vale, collingwool and geelong ymca

this is at present all but the add will be in the green guide soon

the new company was advised not to advertise at present but may at a later date.

games, programs and parts are all still there, it was all ok just like nothing had happened...

but there will not be as many venues as there was as the new people could not get all the same dates

and places, we will have to sit and wait...
