Moving To Melbourne
#1
Hi,

My family (me, my wife and baby) are thinking of moving to Melbourne. We are thinking of moving to one of the suburbs, which is no more that a 30-40minute journey into the city and has a family orientated and friendly community. We are Jewish and would need to live near a synagogue and maybe jewish schools.

We have heard that the following suburbs may be suitable: Bentleigh, Bentleigh East, McKinnon, St Kilda East, Ripponlea, Elsternwick, Caulfied, Caulfield North Caufield South, Glen Huntly, Brighton North, Brighton East, Ormond, Hampton East, Moorabin.

We would initially be looking to rent a 3-bed house and then to buy. Budget would be about $300-400 per week for rent. We would love to hear from anyone who knows any of these areas and can let us know if they are suitable and nice places to live or not. Are the living standards good out there? - such as work/life balance, disposable income, affordable housing, etc?

Also, if you could help us with ideas of the cost of living out there including;

rent for 3-bed house

food for family of 3

transport costs including travel to city for work

life/health insurance

council taxes/rates

utilities - such as gas, electricity & water

phone bills - landline and mobile

school fees - private or governemnt schools

On a seperate issue, do you know what the normal working hours are in Melbourne (its 9am-5.30pm in the UK)

Many thanks!

hi radomskya,

of the suburns you mentioned, I know some of them are quite expensive to buy or rent a house.

e.g brighton and caulfield are quite expensive areas. i am guessing moorabin is cheaper but it is also semi-industrial area so you just need to be mindful of which street you choose otherwise you might end up near a factory. to get a feel for what is available you can check out a website like

Here are a few jewish links that might be of some help:
