Snakes In The Suburbs?
#1
Hi Guys,

I'm trying to convince my other half to move to Melbourne - probably the south eastern suburbs.

The only thing that's stopping her is the fear of snakes.

I'm just wondering what the likelyhood of seeing any snakes in the suburbs, how often do you see them?

Cheers

i never see them near where i live!

i know they occassionally see them in the far outer suburbs like sunbury (in the north of melbourne) for example. your house would need to be near a big park/forest to get any snakes in your garden. i have seen a couple of snakes in lysterfield state park which is in the far south eastern suburbs. i guess some of these might wander into surrounding gardens.

stay away from forests etc and you should be fine!

if it's anything like it is in sydney, you're not likely to see any unless you live next to the bush. i know someone (in sydney though, not melbourne) who lives close to a national park and she told me she's only seen one in 22 years, and the one she saw was just after she moved in, not long after the area was cleared for housing.

the only snakes i've ever seen have been in the zoo.

i used to see quite a few tiger snakes in the highlands of tasmania where i used to go for fishing holidays. i had a tiger snake that tried to bite me once as i almost stepped on it but that was in a swamp area so the snake did not feel my footsteps as i approached. that is a very unsual place to be! i don't suppose you intend to tramp around in swamps like me!!!

if the ground is firm, the vibration of your footsteps travels much further and the snake will almost always run and hide before you even get to see them <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> if you are in the bush/forest, make sure u make lots of noise and they will hear you coming!!! no problem.
