Victoria Brewery In Melbourne
#1
Since I can't start a new topic, I'll beguin here.

My husband picked up a belt buckle in a second hand shop that represents the Victoria Brewery In Melbourne. On the back is has a stamp 002. Does anyone know about the brewery- Is it still in operation?? the buckle seems to be in very good shape, Was wondering how old it might be.

Thank you for any reponses

i've done a bit of digging and found that the brewery still exists in east melbourne, but no longer functions as a brewery. this brewery, where victoria bitter was first brewed, was built in 1854 but had been derelict since 1995 until it was redeveloped into a residential and retail precinct known as “tribeca”, at a cost of around $240 million. the development included restoration of the heritage walls and retention of several existing buildings, including the historic brew towers, the bottling hall, trusses over the central public courtyard and a number of the vintage beer cellars.

The Victoria Brewery demonstrates a mixture of styles in a render and brick composition on a rustic bluestone base. Queen Anne, castellated Tudor Gothic and Romanesque are all represented. An undulating facade with towers and an arched gateway feature in the clever design. The castellation has a dramatic effect on the skyline. William Pitts early industrial designs demonstrate his versatility and skill.

Note to glen: should this be moved to the "melbourne information" part of the forum?

Thanks helen, yes i moved the topic over.

Barbara, the reason you could not create a topic was because you were trying to create a topic in the "site news" subforum. That is reserved for forum administrators only (like me!). You can create topics everywhere else though <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Thank you. I'm very new to 'Chat' so please excuse my ignorance.

My mum is Australian born, Melbourne area, came to US as a war bride, so my husband was excited when he found the belt buckle. We plan to travel down under in the next couple of years. I have lots of family I've never met. Looking forward to the trip.

Thank you for your kindness.
