What About Eastern Subrubs?
#1
Howdy Melbournites!

My partner and I have a good opportunity to move to melbourne as part of my job. We are a young family (26-28) with a 5yr and 1yr old and im settle my thoughts on what suburbs to think about moving to which are affordable, safe and good for young families.

My initial search lead me to Werribee and Hoppers Crossing, due to being affordable, very close to the train line and highway/freeway into melbourne and only being approx. 30kms out.

i however had read in other posts here that Werribee has youth gang voilence and wondering if these two suburbs have high levels of crime and government housing, unemployment etc.

I have read hte post regarding the eastern sububs around bentliegh etc but i dont believe we can afford anymore than 400k so the closer eastern subrubs are likely out of the picture, hence why i asked about western suburbs.

other areas i have looked into are Laverton, Altona, Brooklyn and Braybrook area, how are these? its my understanding that sunshine and st albans would be a no.

Any help or suggestions regarding affordable, safe and family friendly suburbs would be appreciated.

Hi damon,

The prices of houses in Melbourne have gone through the roof lately so i think you will struggle to find a good deal in any suburb!

I live on the south east side.

I have never heard of gang violence in Werribee but i guess there might be the occasional group of trouble makers. my experience has been that Melbourne doesn't have "gangs"...at least not in the American sense of the word. it is just the occasional disorganised group of young and bored idiots causing trouble usually.

If you want crime statistics on a particular area there here are the tools you need.

(1) First here is a link to the Victorian police crime statistics. you can search for crime stats for each local council area (or local government area or LGA).

(2) But you might be wondering what would be name of the local council for Werribee. Good question.... Well have a look at this map and you will see that the local council is called Wyndham City Council.

Happy house hunting.
