Glen, I've noticed we get a lot of "bots" posting as well. Do they count as posts?

hi powerzone,

which bots do you mean? if it is someone posting about selling handbags or viagra etc then they are often people paid to spam forums. so they are actually real people. but they are BAD BAD BAD people <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I try to delete that stuff when I can.

if you mean that you seen Googlebot on the "current users" list then then in actual fact a Google bot cannot post anything as it could not get through the numeric security code thingy. Not that they want to post anything anyway. They just "crawl" the web looking for stuff to add to the google search index. So for example this discussion we are having now may eventually get "crawled" by the bot and then if you do a search for something on this page...e.g. "numeric security code thingy" (which I mentioned above) then this page might appear in the google search results.

The reason it might look like the Googlebot is posting in the forum is because it just clicks on all the links on the page to see where they go. And so that is why it looks like the bot might be posting. In actual fact it would have just hit an "internet dead end".

Cheers, Glen

OK, so if you see a post from someone the looks like Guest_author_* is that someone disguised as a bot?

I guess the real question is....how do they post without joining as a member?

the way the website is set up a "guest"' can post a question or make a comment. So they are "real" people and not bots. I could make it so that just members could add things to the forum. But we don't really have that many members yet and I wanted to encourage the casual user to contribute or ask a question (and make it easy for them).

cheers, glen

Ghost of PZ has just posted a reply to a topic that you have subscribed to titled "How Quiet?".

Strange, but funny! Thanks for that glen!

One idea I did have a while back in order to increase traffic was to maybe have someone set up a sister site in Sydney, or Brisbane etc and have links to and from each site which might increase awareness???

hi PZ,

yeah i considered setting up a sydney forum too but it would be hard to run a sydney website when i have only been there for a few hours in total!! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> one thing that surprised me was that the people who seemed most interested in a melbourne forum were the people who did not live here! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

the website is still fairly new. i should probably be doing more promotion activities but I have been a little distracted lately with my holiday to WA.

thanks for all of your contributions to the forum. they have been great.

cheers, glen

when i get around to it (i'm good at putting things off!) i might post some more photos - but, as i didn't use my digital camera, means i have to scan them first, which is a bit of a nuisance.....

(have to go now, i really have to do some work sometime)

It's great for people having some place to share the view and point of everything. Maybe some more intresting topics will be better.

Cheers!

Yes, when I get some spare time I'll try and start some new threads that focus on Melbourne, probably in the entertainment area.

Keep an eye on this thread for updates <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
