Major Difference Between...
#1
Yeah, I was born and raised here in the US. I even served in the military - thought this was THE palce to be.

Then I started really looking at other places. Oz is starting to look more and more like what the US was when I was younger.

People talk to each other. That's VERY rare here. People are afraid to have a conversation, even while waiting in line to check out where there isn't much else to do. I've not spoken to more than two other familys where we live and the houses are close together... People are afraid to talk to their neighbors.

Work place ethics. You are constantly under the gun here, no matter where you work. I've not had one job in 20 years where I felt I could let my gaurd down and jsut do my job. Every manager is out to serve the company and employees are expendable at any time. Here in New York state they can fire you at any time without even giving reason.

The folks I've talked to in Oz? They love to converse! The art of conversation has not taken a back seat to television or text messenging - yet. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I'm working a contract here for a company in Oz. The pay is what I'd expect to get paid for my level of expertise. They didn't even haggle over the rate! The initial consultation is for 10-20 hours and I finished that part right off in two days... They told me to get to it as I could so I could relax and get it done to my satisfaction... And if I had to use up the full 20, no worries.

They are treating me like a person instead of a cog in a machine.

Any wonder I want to move as soon as possible? I'd be able to make aliving without getting put back in the hospital for high blood presure and a near heart attack!

Hi ikyoto,

I have never been the USA but i guess there will be pockets in Australia that are much the same as you have described. Though I think the reason people might not talk to their neighbours is more because they can't be bothered and they have their own busy lives to look after. I don't think they would ignore each other due to fear.

Generally over here you can't get sacked for no reason. And we have rules about unfair and unlawful dismissal. Though the previous Howard government tried to removed unfair dismissal and they then lost the next election because of this.

Only problem these days, particularly in Melbourne is the soaring house prices. Otherwise things are OK in OZ atm.

Every single person I've talked to who has been there has said the same thing - that if they could have stayed, they would have. Those who had the chance always did, even the one who took a pay cut by over 50%. He said that even though he's not making the money, he and his family are far happier.

That's what I need for mine. A good place where people still (for the majority of the time) treat each other fairly.
