Melbourne Living Expenses
#1
hi

sorry for my english

it was such a nice suprise us to find a forum like this

thanks to ppl here especialy to very hard working "glen" for helping people like us.

information you re providing means a lot for us <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

as a married couple we are planing to live in melbourne very soon but due to immigration procedures we are not qualified as skilled workers because Australia goverment is not accepting aquaculture engineer as a known title. because we believe it's very new title all around the world (canada goverment took it on the list just 2 years ago) anyway this means we have to plan something alternative.

what we could plan is my wife will have a 2 years hairdressing n saloon management course which will provide her a known title and a go for 2 year study oblligation.

in worst case scenario this means we may have 2 years of life with 1 person fulltime+ 1 person part time work on low income jobs such as delivery , taxi driver etc...

there may be better jobs since ı am a padi scuba instructor and we have some additional skills.

but in worst case we calculate total income of ours with a quite hard working will be somewhere between 3000-3500 aud net per month we'll bring some money with us around 50k aud but we want to be sure that will we have an avarage life

since the avarege life word is so relative I have to tell what avarage means to us : rent a descent studio or a small house which is in 15-20 km radius far from central , cooking at home , listening music <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ı have a 100.000 mp3 archive , a few social activities in a week like cinema , gas for a 2.hand car and modest expenses like this

so is this estimation correct

and is it possible to live in melbourne for two people with 2000 aud per month because we have to pay 1000 for the course.

thanks very very much for the info you2ll provide becouse it will be an important element in our desicion.

Hi there,

petrol price in Melbourne is about $1.60 AUD per litre

for rent you are probably going to have to pay about $1800 per month if you want to live not too far from the city. there is very few rental properties at the moment and the prices have really gone through the roof lately.

food is fairly cheap. if you shop around you can get a loaf of bread for about $1.50. I am guessing food prices will be similar for you.

a second hand car will cost about $10,000 depending on what you are after.

a cinema ticket varies. most are around $16 but some are cheaper. for example pinewood cinema (waverley cinema) is $8 for most movies.

hope that helps,

cheers, glen

ps we have an aquaculture industry in victoria but I don't know whether there is much employment. you can read a bit about the industry on the fisheries website:

thanks mate

this means we have to earn 1000 per/week to live on without problem

we have to contiue searching because its totally an enigma

some say its quite easy because even if you work as a taxi driver this means 20 aud pr/hr which makes 1000 aud per week with 50 hours hard working

so its only depands on what we can earn , if anybody can give an idea about what can be earn by , which jobs with 50 hours work per week

it ll be great

I don't think taxi drivers make a very good living. They work very hard for their money and often work very long hours. Maybe you can get an aquaculture related job? It would be a shame to let the qualifications go to waste. perhaps in an education institution? or a research body?

Here are some links that might help:

Guys,... accommodation it will become problem too.

Thanks to glen, now i understand better about Australian Property Agent.

are you willing to stay share with other people? or try to rent from "non agent" ?

or you want to use property agent?? because... its almost impossible to rent apartment through an agent if you newly arrived to Australia.

they will ask for:

- Sufficient Steady Income on a bank statement.

- Good Reference from Family or Friends.

- Good Rental History.

And also the agent got hundreds of other applicants, so they will pick which applicants are more stand out from the crowd. it will takes months and you will got nothing.

but if you rent from "non agent" person, then you will be just fine.

ps: Glen, CMIIW Ok?

Hi Chelsea, did you try ringing some on the phone? But yes, I guess what you said will be correct. I still think sub-letting is a good option <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Cheers, Glen

Hi Glen, no i haven't ring yet.. maybe later.

but i did email two Property Agents about my "intention" (whole 1 year payment in advance).

until today i still haven't got any replay..

i don't know why, if they think that's illegal or sick... then i understand completely.

it certainly would not be illegal or sick! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

they are probably not in rush to reply as they are not desperate to find tenants. Calling them would be more effective i think.
