What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
A system of self defence and grappling that places emphasis on ground fighting techniques. Most of the techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu address grappling on the ground. There are some takedowns, self-defense techniques, and striking, but the core of the art involves improving, maintaining, or defending ground positions; along with submissions such as chokes and armlocks.
Brazilian JiuJitsu is based on a modified version of the traditional Japanese Jujutsu called "jiu-do" which is based on the idea of the soft overcoming the hard. In other words, a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant.
History
Jiu-Jitsu was brought to Brazil during 1918 when World Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Maeda, taught Gastao Gracie's son Carlos the art of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. Carlos passed on his knowled ge to other family members . He then decided to open the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Gracie family continued to develop the system throughout the 20th century, often fighting vale tudo matches (precursors to modern MMA or Mixed Martial Arts), during which it gained its focus on ground fighting and refined its techniques.
