I would probably just catch the train to the city and then back out to east malvern station! That would be cheapest.

See the train routes here:

A taxi, and i am guessing here a little,,,, will cost about $50 each way.

here is the taxi rates of a popular local melbourne taxi company:

Hope that helps,

Be careful when using taxi's in Melbourne. Many people have been ripped off. DO NOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARD. If you do, keep the receipts and check your statements for false charges. This is an ongoing problem with the Melbourne taxi industry. For more info google Melbourne Taxi Scam.

Yellow Cabs are awful - a lot of the drivers are useless from experiences I have.

I order a Silver Top if able to choose.

After driving in chinese taxis i am starting to think the aussie taxis are actually safe! Over here there are no seat belts in the back seat, and there is usually metal cage/barrier to smash your head on if there is an accident, and the traffic is nuts!!! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> On the plus side, chinese taxis are much easier to hail down since there are hundreds of them. And they are much cheaper. I think every second car on the road is a taxi over here.

There are many complaints about the fraud by cab drivers in Melbourne. I was totally shocked when my friend tell me about it.
