Hey Im in Melbourne now!!!
gymbunny, bring your hubby along to the following event:

http://www.melbournechat.org/index.php?showtopic=4162

You must be quick as the event is filling fast... there are a whole three confirmed attendants (Glen, Viv (Glen's girl) and myself).

On the topic of personal training, I purchased a Nike+ Wristband recently and found the unit a great and comfortable way of tracking times and improving times through motivation... also purchased a Sony Headset Walkman another great and comfortable running aid (no loose wires). I highly recommend both gadgets.

...are you joining me for a run this mid-morning, gymbunny?... ~4.5 Km around the Queens Park Valley... lovely environment for a run that, in parts, is akin to running through a forest sanctuary.

Is it OK if I do it in a virtual manner?

I suppose... There is evidence that suggests sporting visualization is beneficial to some degree.

Is it OK if I in fact walk not run?

Surely you can visualize yourself running rather than walking...?

What about the Nike wristband?

Great unit... displays time, pace, distance and calories.

Does it do pulse rate as well?

Nope... maybe a feature for future versions.

Just how does it work?

Works with a (I assume, radio transmitted) dongle that embeds into Nike shoes that display the Nike+ logo and a wristband that displays run data. I am not sure exactly how the run data is calculated but possibly by the steps over time. The unit does work fairly well out of the box but I calibrated mine that was 0.2 metres off over an 800 metre run.

How much was it?

Good thing I keep receipts... $79.95. My Nike+ Runners cost $250+ bought a couple of years ago, there are likely cheaper Nike+ Runners but buying the best possible runners is important for running─your body will thank you‼

---

An aside... I pulled a best time today at a 4'53 pace over 4.44 km according to Nike+

So that 4'53 is for one Km? Or what?

Pretty much... 4'53" for each km, an average of 4'53" per km over a 4.44 km distance or 21'44" over the entire 4.44 km

Ah so the wrist band needs special shoes?

The shoes are not that special... they just have an inset in the sole.

I could enter in your morning run with me running virtually.

However it is not a pretty sight and would only scare the babies out of their prams!

Funnily enough there are a couple of ladies that run with prams... and run quite well at that.

I believe there is a blanket speed for bikes on shared tracks?

Is that so?

10Km/hour? Yes? No?

There probably is... like the default speed of 50 km/h in streets with no speed signage.

...so am I breaking the law running at over 10 km/h ...?... like a bike, I have sharp edges too <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

...after some googling, seems like 15 km/h is the speed limit on shared paths... I have a new goal in breaking the speed limit of 15 km/h‼ (which will also be a step toward my long time outstanding six minute mile goal)

About your goal of a 6 minute mile. Hmmmmnnn every day not achieving it means the less likely you are to achieve it.

That's the "Father Time" factor.

I would never break a six minute mile with a negative attitude like that <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

...and faster times as the days go by suggest that my glass is half full of poison.

Yes BUT you would not be silent as whispering death biker!

Walkman head gear gives me away─the unit is designed with external sound emission─otherwise, I run quite stealthily... a quality I attribute to growing up with a father that regularly slept on lounge furniture during the day forcing the rest of the family to tip toe around during daily activities.

Nice.. I actually went for a decent run in Melbourne, Saturday morning, 5km at a 4'49" pace on a dirt track with a 1km wind down walk topped of with a 100 metre or so sprint... the sprint nearly killed me‼... and my legs are still hurting today‼

I'm no scientist; however, nutrition is very important too‼
