Reducing Immigration In Australia
#1
I believe Australia should stop sending foriegn aid to poor countries and also stop taking in their refugees and immigrants.

I think yes we should help them BUT we should help those who are in our own country first. We need to get rid of poverty in Australia first before assisting other countries eliminating theirs. Ours would be a smaller job. Let's tackle the smaller job before tackling the big job.

Its only the vast minority that seem to do things because of peoples race (ie. racism), but you rarely hear about them.

Hi Dragon, Such an approach would make Australia look super bad and super heartless in the eyes on the global community.

I think we could probably fix our own problems while also helping others.

Though I also am of the view that the world, as a whole, is overpopulated and Governments should not encourage families to keep having lots of kids etc. The more people there are, the more pollution, food shortages, etc. It sometimes amazes me that this issue does not generate more public discussion around the world. Seems like people just worry about global warming. If the world was not overpopulated there would not be any global warming.

Though I do also have in the back of my mind something I learned when I was back at uni and it stuck in my head until this day. We were learning about Ice Ages etc and apparently they happen every X number of years (well i forgot exactly how often) but I do remember we were supposed to be heading into the next Ice Age! And so in that respect, I prefer global warming over an Ice Age! since I really hate the cold <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':officechair:' />

I would completly agree, but I think you should also consider the fact that the Australian Government is PAYING people to have children also adds to our growing capacity problem. Immigration is a small portion of the tiny issue. Hopefully no one will EVER adopt payed maternity leave!

I beleive Australia was the best country in the world and would be very close to still being the best if it wasn't tainted by other cultral and religious problems, and rationalised the extreme 'political correction' that prevents a tv show like noddy from being aired as it was originally written because a gollywog is present. I saw the removal of gollywog as more racist myself. haha. And then the later issue of Noddy sharing a bed with Big Ears, especially when ###### prefferences are socially acceptable.

Do you ever wonder what our Country will be like in 10 years?

The issue of immigration certainly generates a lot of debate here in the UK. Obviously there is always the racist element that ( to put it politely) would rather there were no immigrants at all, but in general I think they have been pretty much accepted by the majority.

We have had trouble for a few years now though with illegals being smuggled here and this has caused its share of problems. However, now the recession has really started to bite, we can see the protectionism argument gaining some momentum. As everyone within the European Union has the right to work in any country within the Union, we had a flood of workers from the poorer east European countries coming here and working for low wages (sometimes working as self-employed for less than the legal minimum wage of an employed person). Whilst this didn't affect us so much while work was relatively easy to come by, now massive job losses are being announced every day, it is becoming more of a concern.

By the way, we not only have paid maternity leave but also paid paternity leave!

Does anyone know where I can report someone that lied on their visa form to get a visa to work in Australia? I hear they have arrived already.

The Immigration Dob In Line sounds perfect. How would I dial this from the UK?

I wouldn't actually know, i just tried calling it with a few standard prefixes and nothing seemed to work, might need to call your telco and ask them how to dial a 1800 number in Australia. It should have your dial out number in front followed by 61 for Australia but i'm not sure how much of the 1800 prefix if any you drop.

There should be a separate international version of the 1800 number.

EDIT: Try the DIAC National Office Switchboard +61 02 6264 1111 located in our nations capital. Be sure to mention the fact that you are calling from outside Australia.

There is also the Migration Branch Australia House Strand London on 0906 5508900 however, I am not sure how helpful they would be--might be worth trying first for the local call rates.

back in the 50's my parents came to Australia from europe.

but having said that i hear what is being said.

i do think we can help our country more by stop going over seas to have everything made. on today tonight show yesterday they showed supper markets and most of the food being made or owned overseas.

this country can do more. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

lets face it. any country needs to have a postive population growth. otherwise there wont be enough young people to support the older. pure economics. So less birth rate causes countries to collapse. if females dont wont to have babies, we should start artificial baby farms. the only way to keep the human race alive.

I think jess needs to study economics again =p There is a time and a place events need to take place for positive economic development. The issue isn't so much the growth of Australia, but the deterioration of life as we know it.

I am no economist but I think if the world population declined that would make everything so much easier. For example climate change would be a non-issue. And water shortages would also be a non-issue.

Agreed. It's interesting that there isn't a positive correlation between the growth of resources required to survive and the growth of population in Australia, but The government illiberally wastes tax payers money paying parents to reproduce when they don't provide the necessary means to support the anticipated exponential growth, especially when exports are declining, jobs are being lost, and all these new families will have trouble supporting their children adequately anyway.
