Moving To Melbourne - Footscray?

Hi

Can anyone advise about Footscray and its people,is it a safe area to live and do we have good public schools for kids(girls) 5 and 7 years.We intend to move there by next year . Would like to know about other good areas nearby with affordable rent, good schools and public transport facilities.

i don't know too much about Footscray. it used to have a bad name but perhaps it is better these days.

Thks very much Glen, if not too demanding just give me a list of the good eastern and western suburds for a family to live and also which have quite easy access to the city

if i make a list it would be pretty long! anywhere in the south east or east is fine. i don't really know the west very well.
